Thu , 04 U13 Friendly: Twin Oaks FC 2 v 14 Royal United
Well, we came up against another team new to this league and after our pleasing performance on Saturday, the boys again went out and played terrific football and some of the goals we awesome.

Everyone played a blinder today, but Aaron in goal had an excellent game, Tom Frankland worked his socks off again and the defence of Will Jones, Harry Garman, Luke Polie, Jonny Washington-Jones & Josh Wood all played with confidence.

Well done all the lads today, again!

A disappointing performance tonight although a little unlucky in the first half. I am sure we shall see much better from the team in the coming weeks.

Sat , 30 U13 Friendly: Broadbridge Heath 2 v 10 Royal United
It was a good start to the season as the new U13's won at BBH. It took us 5 minutes to settle down, but we went on not only to dominate play and come off at half time with a 6-0 lead, but the football being played was very pleasing to watch. The second half saw injuries to Guy Packham & Reiss Blackwood which meant we were playing with 10 players for most of the half and although BBH got a couple of goals, we still managed to score another 4. The second half display was not as fluent as the first and with a couple of other players having problems with new boots, we didn't play as we did in the first half.

Saying that, an encouraging start to the season and with the 3 new players coming in, we look a good side and will always try to play the entertaining football, although I know we can dig in and battle when required. Dave, Jeff & I know what we need to work on further at training over the next few months and this will no doubt see a further improvement in the team.

Well done all the lads today.

Sun , 24 U7: T D Shipley Tournament
This was the last time the lads would play as under 7's and they went out in style. We played 5 games and managed to notch up 24 goals, but more impressively conceded none.

We had some very impressive individual performances, but once again they played very well as a team. A very big congratulations to all the boys who have played in the many tournaments over the last few months. Keep up the good work and we will hopefully have a season to be proud of.

Sun , 20 U7: Faygate Tournament
This was a very long drawn out day, which left not only the kids cold and exhausted but the supporters too. Despite everything we still managed to play some very good football at times. We managed to score only 9 goals in 7 games, which I think proves the opposition is getting stronger. We conceded 6 goals, which overall was ok and the kids should be proud of themselves yet again. Keep up the good work lads.

Sat , 19 U14: U14's Win Uckfield Tournament
The Under 14's finished the season in style with another six-a-side success, lifting the Uckfield Tournament Trophy.

This is the teams third trophy in their last 5 tournaments and represents a fantastic team effort with 14 players having been involved in the winning teams.

The boys who played today put in a terrific performance throughout and having made the semi-final last year it was great to go all the way this year.

The team won their group to progress to the semi-finals with 4 wins and a draw and then won 1-0 in the semi-final against East Grinstead Utd.

In the final they faced the hosts and with a partisan crowd cheering on the home side the boys were unlucky not to win the game in normal time but needed all their nerve to win 6-5 in a penalty shoot out.

James made two great saves during normal penalties but with Max D and William both hitting the post the shoot-out went to sudden death. Theo matched Uckfield's first penalty taker with a neat finish but when the next Uckfield player fired over it was up to Patrick to slot home to give the team victory.

A wonderful team effort today in which the team managed to not concede a single goal. A tremendous achivement. Well done to you all!

Sun , 15 U14: Petersfield Tournament
This was the first time we have entered this tournament and yet again we came across some very good teams to give the boys a really good test.

Unfortunately, we faced an exceptional team, in St Francis Youth, in the opening game and with the boys slow to get started we went down 3-0.

Things started better in our second game when we took the lead against a strong AFC Portchester side when Max L slotted home. But a lack of urgency and commitment cost us as we lost the game 3-1.

In the third game the team found some form and started to play the football we know they are capable of as they swept aside Cowplain Youth 5-0. Patrick getting three goals, Max L one and Tim with his first goal for the club.

In the fourth game, despite going a goal down against Mytchett Athletic, the team dominated play but couldn't find the back of the net with a number of chances missing the target. This turned out to be crucial as even a point in this game would have allowed the team to progress to the Quarter-Finals.

Despite the disappointment though the team did finish the day with an impressive victory in their fifth game. Having gone 1-0 down they came back to beat Pagham 5-1 with 4 goals from Patrick and another goal from Tim.

Disappointing though the slow start was the team was unlucky in the end not to make the knockout stages. Although it did mean we managed to get on our way home before the heavy rain started to fall!

Well done boys a tough competition today that hopefully we all learned something from.

Sat , 14 U7 WINNERS: Roffey Robins Tournament
Another very impressive display from all our youngsters.

Twelve teams entered this event and we excelled ourselves enough to take the title of overall winners. The twelve teams were split into 2 groups with the winners from each group playing in a final against each other.

We won all of our 5 matches to put us top of our table. Most of our wins were very comfortable with a massive 19 goals scored in total. Once against our defensive records was outstanding, with only one goal being conceded.

The final against Upper Beeding was not as easy as previous games, but we kept on battling to eventually put home the winning goal in extra time.

All the players deserve a big congratulations again for their performances. They are really starting to play good football together as a team aswell as individually. WELL DONE!!

Another impressive performance by our young ones. A slight change in squad to previous weeks, but still we managed to produced some excellent football.

Goals were not as plentiful as in previous events, but still we put home 11 and conceeded just 2.

We won 3 games and drew one, which if our league was competetive would have secured us as overall winners with most points.

Congratulation once again to the whole team for both their individual performances and as a team.

Once again another fantastic performance by our under7s.

We dominated in all matches, bar 1 and played some amazing football. The passing was at times superb, the whole reading of the game was great and some of the goals were outstanding. All the players played exceptionally well and really worked well as a team.

They are continuously improving and developing their skills and are becoming a very good all round team.

In 8 games we managed to score a staggering 23 goals and conceded just 4.

Well done, keep it up and congratulations to you all for winning 7 of the 8 games played.

Sun , 25 U14 Friendly: Royal United 5 v 3 Sussex Police
A terrific match and a fantastic atmosphere today in our charity game against Sussex Police.

Both teams played some delightful football and the game was played with great sportsmanship throughout.

The terrific pitch conditions at The Holbrook Club enabled Royals to settle in to a good passing rhythm and they took an early lead when Max V poked home from six yards.

Patrick quickly added a second when he broke clear to finish neatly in the far corner and Max V grabbed a stunning third when he showed some great skill on the edge of the box before lifting the ball over the keeper.

The police team, stunned by Royal's fast start, started to get to grips with the pace of the game and put the defence under some pressure with Nathan turning a ferocious shot around the post.

But the first half ended with Royal's in complete control when Ben P curled a shot in from the edge of the box to make it 4-0 at the break.

In the second-half the police team played to their height advantage with plenty of route one football and gradually clawed there way back in to the game.

However, having narrowed the deficit to a single goal the Royal's team made sure of victory when Patrick curled in his second from the edge of the box.

A great day was had by all and although I don't think the police team wil be chasing any criminals this afternoon hopefully they will have recovered in time for a rematch next season!

I can also confirm that £400 was raised from the sale of cakes and programmes, etc so a big thank you to everyone for their support.

Sun , 18 U14: U14's Win Cranleigh Tournament
Having finished runners-up in this tournament last year we turned up full of hope. However, the day got off to a bad start when having been asked to enter two teams by Cranleigh they put both teams in the same group!

Despite my protests the decision would not be reversed, which was disappointing for all concerned.

Regretabbly I also had the disappointment of two players not turning up! This meant the teams also had to be reshuffled at the last minute.

Unfortunately, the yellow team had no time to get use to the changes as they were the first game on and although they played some excellent passing football they went down 2-0 to the hosts.

The blue team was up next and they got off to an excellent start with a 2-0 win over Ockley Acorns Utd (the team that beat us in the final last year on penalties - so it was good to get some revenge).

Next the two teams had to play each other and in a tight game the blue team won 2-1.

Unfortunately in their final game the yellow team lost 5-0 to Ockley but a 0-0 draw for the blue team with Cranleigh saw them qualify for the semi-final.

The blue team got off to a great start in the semi-final against Albury Eagles when Charlie hit a screamer in to the bottom corner. They quickly extended their lead when Max L set up Patrick who hit an unstoppable shot to make it 2-0.

In the second-half Max L extended our lead when his firm shot went in off the keeper and although Albury pulled one back in a goal mouth scramble the blue team had secured the teams place in our second consecutive final.

Our opponents in the final were to be Cranleigh and having played them in the group stage we knew the game would be tight.

So it proved to be but with 4 minutes left Max L thought he got the winning goal when he managed to squeeze his shot under the Cranleigh keeper.

But with the team looking like they were in control a moments loss of concentration allowed Cranleigh to equalise and the game went in to extra-time.

With extra-time producing no more goals the final went to penalties again. But on this occassion every player held their nerve with all 5 players scoring. Nathan saving Cranleigh's 4th penalty to secure the trophy.

Well done everyone today. Although only half of the squad got a trophy I feel everyone involved in the team should take credit for the teams success and I am sure that those that didn't get a trophy will get the opportunity to in later tournaments we have planned.

Squad:- Nathan, James, Tom, Theo, Charlie(1), Ben L, Adam, William, Chris, Patrick(2), Max L(5), Max D(1) and Josiah.

   U12: Win Cranleigh 6-a-side Tournament
It was perfect conditions for this tournament and Royals wanted to go one better than last week when we came second at the Northchapel tournament. We were the second game on, playing Horsham Sparrows and although we created a few chances, we couldn’t find that elusive 1st goal and the game finished 0-0. Although we had a long wait between games, it gave Dave & me an opportunity to look at the teams in the others division, with Farncombe Youth impressing. However, we then came up against Horsham Crusaders and with Billingshurst Youth & Sparrows having drawn; we knew we had to beat them. Again, although we dominated the game, we had to settle for a 1-0 win the 3 points being crucial. The final game of the draw was against Billingshurst, which we comfortably won 2-0 to see us march into the semi final against Cranleigh.

The boys had played some very good football up to this point and they were told again by Dave * myself to keep playing that way and always look to pass and move.

We’d watched Cranleigh in the other division and new they had 1 or 2 talented players, but although we gave away a couple of goals, we came out deserved 4-3 winners. Aaron in goal was commanding his area, punching clear on a couple of occasions and racing out of his area to block any breaks, Harry & Luke were both impressive in defence, commanding and playing the ball out of our area to the feet of our midfield. The midfield of Stanley Rice, Jacob Waller & Guy Packham were using the ball well and supporting both the defence and attack when required. Then we had Lewis Clark & Tom Frankland who were both causing the defences problems. We did do very well at the back today, but some of the finishing and attempts on goal were also excellent.

We knew we’d be up against Horsham Sparrows in the final as they overcame Farncombe in a penalty shootout and although we’d lost Guy Packham through injury, the 7 lads were well up for this one.

Stanley Rice came closest for Royals when he struck the woodwork early on, but no-one could break the deadlock. Extra time came and went and before we knew it penalties were upon us. Dave and I spoke to the lads as Rob Frankland kindly had a chat with Aaron. We scored our first and obviously the chat Rob gave worked, as Aaron dived to his left to save their first. We missed our 3rd and Sparrows scored the rest, for us to go to sudden death. Our team captain Harry Garman then had to step up and he converted his penalty to put the pressure on Sparrows, who unfortunately put there’s wide to see the Royals players celebrate a hard fought tournament.

I again thought we were one of the best footballing sides at the tournament and when the host manager came up before the penalties were taken and said there was only one team that deserved to win as we had played some lovely football, it was pleasing to hear.

The boys thoroughly deserved the victory today and they got there by working hard and playing as a team. The whole squad battled for each other, never gave up playing the way we want to play and always encouraged each other.

The support was from the parents was again terrific……thank you. That certainly gave them the edge at times.

Lastly, it was good to see ALL the Royals teams that entered the tournament do well. In fact every team managed to reach at least a semi final in their age group. The U8’s made the semi’s, as did the U9’s & U15’s. Also, as well as ourselves winning on penalties, the U14’s also did the same.

Congratulations boys!

Sun , 11 U12: Make Final @ Northchapel Tournament
An impressive display of football saw Royal United U12's come runners-up at today's tournament. Royals were again by far the best footballing team on show in today's age group, but we just fell short, having found it hard work to finish off teams, after having the majority of possesion. With that and the fact we hit the crossbar/post on about a dozen occasions, meant we weren't going away winners. However, the boys thoroughly deserved their medals.

Well done all the boys today, it was worth watching you play as a team!

Having been extremely successful in local six-a-side tournaments over the years we decided to go further afield in search of a challenge and the team certainly found it here!

The quality of the opposition was excellent and although we never quite found our best form the team hopefully learnt a lot from the experience.

After drawing the first game 0-0, the team unlucklily lost the next game 2-1 against the hosts. They then unfortunately lost the next game 2-0 before bouncing back to win there final game 1-0.

The thin line between success and failure was, however, put in to sharp contrast when we realised that a win in the seond game would have qualified us for the semi-final!

William Nash and Ben Pinches scored the goals.

Wed , 23 U15 League: Lingfield 9 v 1 Royal United
The boys completed their league programme by suffering their heaviest defeat of the season away at Lingfield.

The season would have ended brilliantly if this game had stopped at half time. At that point the score was 1-1 and arguably Royals were the better team. Every boy made a superb contribution and put the frighteners on the league champions.

The boys went behind to a silly goal but regained their composure and battled away for an equaliser. They were rewarded just before half time when they scored following the move of the half. Sam Freeman passed to Alex Hughes on the right wing and Alex then flew past two defenders before crossing for Dan Drazek to score.

The second half as the final score shows, was a completely different story. Despite many of the boys continuing on from where they left off in the first half, a few decided to do their own thing to the detriment of the team.

Even in a disappointing second half there were some heroic performances from a number of boys. Asher Jenkins and Tom Carvell for example, both ran their socks off for the team, before both having to leave the pitch due to injury mid way through the second half. Dan Drazek who was unwell before the match, had the thankless task of being our lone striker, but continued to work for the team for the full eighty minutes.

Well done to all of those boys who kept working for their team for the whole match.

A special thanks to Chris Jones, Sharon Drazek, Karen Hughes and staff from Hillcrest for helping us to transport the boys to this match.

Well done everyone for finishing the season again with an encouraging performance and a victory.

The goal came just before half time when Max L was played in by William and although his shot was saved Patrick was on hand to fire home the rebound.

An excellent rearguard performance and another solid performance from the ever improving Nathan secured a well deserved clean sheet.

   U12 Friendly: Royal United 3 v 3 Horsham Sparrows
Royals ended the season with a friendly against Horsham Sparrows, who finished joint 2nd in Division A.

Before the game started, Jeff, Dave & I asked for the boys to get back to basics and play the football we are good at. The boys did listen and we played some good flowing football, with everyone supporting each other and working as a team.

Although we had the better of the early exchanges, Sparrows caught us out twice with quick breaks and we went 2-0 down. However, we could have been in the lead by then apart from some good goalkeeping by the Sparrows keeper. To their credit, Royals kept pushing forward and Alex Taylor broke the offside trap and raced clear of the defence. Then as the keeper came off his line, brilliantly chipped him to take us into half time 2-1 down.

We wanted more of the same and to give the full squad a run out, made a few changes. Stanley Rice then got us level and when Alex Taylor was brought down in the box, he got up and converted the penalty to see Royals go 3-2 up.

It was end to end stuff for the remaining 10 minutes and Royals could have extended their lead further but saw two efforts go just wide. Sparrows did threaten our goal and got level with 5 minutes remaining. The final score being 3-3.

A very entertaining game by both sides, but more importantly, I think it proves that with the team we have, we can more than hold our at a higher level.

A special thanks has to go to Guy Packham, who took over in goal for us today because of an injury to Aaron and Josh being away and did a superb job. There were also good performances by Harry Garman & Luke Polie, who were both strong and commanding at the back; Tom Frankland & Jonny Washington-Jones on the flanks and Lewis Clark playing in his 'free' role.

A big thanks must also go to all the parents who watched and encouraged the boys today!

Sat , 19 U12 Friendly: Royal United 6 v 1 Greenway
Royals entertained Greenway in this end of season friendly.

Both teams started this game well, but it was Royals who were able to get an early lead, when some excellent passing was rewarded as Jacob Waller collected a pass on the edge of the Greenway penalty area and coolly slotted the ball home past the advancing keeper.

Royals then started to control the game and it was a 25 yard cracker from the impressive Stanley Rice which sailed over the Greenway keeper to make it 2-0. We increased our lead further when Tom Frankland scored after a quickly taken corner, but we went in 3-1 at half time, as Greenway got a goal back before the break.

The second half saw Royals again have the majority of possession, and Stanley Rice went on to get a second, before Alex Taylor got on the score sheet with a further two goals.

There where also impressive displays from Luke Polie, Lewis Clark and Jamie Puddicombe, who went in goal today as we were without either Aaron Chaplin or Joshua Gay.

Royals win should have been more but we couldn't convert our chances. However, Jeff, Dave and I will be putting the boys through some rigorous training this summer and together with the hard work we expect from the boys, we will see the benefits.

An excellent performance today from the team that deserved at least a point but in the end we were beaten by a late strike that deflected over the keeper.

Some good football played today though and we were very unlucky not to score with some excellent chances created. Max L went close on a number of occassions and could have had a few more had the offside flag not been raised every time he broke clear of the defence, Max D nearly curled one in from the edge of the box, Patrick had an effort turned away by the keeper and Tim hit the post, not to mention a good shout for a penalty that was turned down.

Unlucky today boys but a very good performance against a strong Maidenbower team. Well done.

   U14 League: Lingfield 0 v 9 Royal United
Regrettably Lingfield had forfeited this game last night due to not having enough registered players available but with the help of three players from another team they kindly agreed to play the game anyway.

With the pitch in a dreadful state the team did struggle in the early stages to settle. However, once Ben P scored his first goal of the season (when he turned in a corner) the team never looked back. William quickly added a second and Max L sent Patrick clear just before the break for a third.

In the second-half Patrick scored twice more, Max L grabbed a second half hat-trick and William got a second to complete the scoring but on a better pitch it could have been so much more.

Lingfield, however, showed terrific spirit and never gave up and the defence had to focus hard to keep the clean sheet. James making an excellent goal line clearance in the second half.

Well played today boys a very convincing result that will hopefully build your confidence for our final two games.

   U12 League: Royal United 8 v 1 Dorking St's Puma's
What a pleasing performance to finish off the league season!

We wanted to finish this season off with a win and confirm our final position of 3rd place. The boys worked hard on their training on Wednesday and Jeff, Dave & myself want them to start taking what we do in our training onto the pitch; they did that today.

I spoke to a few of the boys before the start, but they were all definitely up for today’s game and it didn’t take long before a perfectly delivered corner from Jacob Waller caused problems in the Dorking defence and Alex Taylor was perfectly placed to slot home the first. Lewis Clark then had a good effort well saved by the Dorking keeper, who definitely kept the score line out of double figures.

All the pressure was coming from Royals, with the boys communicating much better and they started to realise that at times they had more time on the ball, allowing them to look up and select the right pass. Jonny Washing-Jones, on his full game back from a broken arm, was the next to test their keeper who again managed to keep the ball out. Guy Packham then took a quick throw-in to Jacob Waller who breezed past a couple of challenges before delivering another cross which Chris Keeble tucked away.

The Royals defence of Joshua Wood, Jamie Puddicombe, Harry Garman & Will Jones were dealing with any threat that the Dorking attack was creating and a long clearance by Harry Garman went to Alex Taylor who with the ball at his feet went past the defence again and scored a cracking goal with his left foot from the edge of the area.

Alex nearly got another before half-time when a cross by Jacob Waller just went wide. However, Alex did get his first half hat-trick when Jacob made a good tackle, the ball went straight to Chris Keeble who’s first time knock went to Alex who slotted home. The play that lead to that goal was excellent. 4-0 at half time.

We started the second half as we finished the first, with Joshua Wood & Lewis Clark having efforts just off target and it wasn’t long before Jacob Waller lifted the ball over the defence, but when the effort by Alex Taylor was saved, Chris Keeble nipped in to header the rebound into the back of the net.

Dorking never gave up battling and they got a consolation when a long range effort flew over Josh Gay’s head. To be fair to Josh, he didn’t have a chance and it wasn’t a busy day for him today.

However, Royals kept up the pressure and Alex got his 4th after being setup by Joshua Wood excellent through ball. The impressive Jacob Waller, along with the rest of the midfield of Guy Packham, Lewis Clark & Jonny Washington-Jones, dominated the middle of the park and after another great defence splitting ball from Guy Packham after good work from Jamie Puddicombe, Jacob Waller got on the score sheet to make the score 7-1.

Chris Keeble then setup Guy Packham whose effort was well saved by the keeper, before Alex Taylor’s effort was tipped over the bar. However, Lewis Clark finished off the scoring when he was sent clear and with a drop of the shoulder, committed the keeper to diving before curling the ball into the right hand corner of the goal.

MOM today goes to the whole team!

This was a really pleasing performance in the way we played, but I have to comment on the way both sets of players conducted themselves today.

The boys were once again in action against local rivals Broadbridge Heath, and went one better than Wednesday evening's draw in securing a 2-0 win.

The boys started strongly with the mid field controlling the game, the defence solid and the forwards keeping the Broadbridge Heath defenders busy. After a number of chances the boys eventually took the lead mid way through the first half. Matt Mason's corner was met superbly by captain Conor May who found the top corner.

Despite some surging runs down the left wing by Dan Drazek and with James Callaby and Ryan Gay constantly pressurising the centre of the Heath defence, the half ended with the boys leading 1-0.

A really strong second half performance saw the boys continue to create chances, and shut out the Broadbridge Heath attack. A second goal was a long time coming but it was the Matt Mason, Conor May combo which made the break through with Conor finishing from close range for his second of the game.

Well done boys for a really impressive performance to move us up to third in the league.

Wed , 02 U15 League: Royal United 2 v 2 Broadbridge Heath
Honours were even in an entertaining mid week match in front of an impressively large crowd.

Broadbridge Heath took the lead in the opening minutes with a powerful header from a corner kick. With chances being created at both ends, it was no great surprise that Royals equalised before half time. Matt Mason got possession of the ball in the penalty area and finished smartly from close range.

The second half continued where the first half left off with both sides creating chances. Broadbridge snatched the lead again but the boys kept the pressure up and equalised in the closing minutes. Another perfect ball from mid field into the strikers was controlled by James Callaby and despite the pressure from the Broadbridge Heath defenders he finished superbly.

The boys created a couple of further chances but the match ended 2-2.

Well done boys for a good solid performance.

Sat , 22 U14 League: Royal United 2 v 7 Hurstpierpoint
Although the team started slowly today and gifted Hurstpierpoint two early goals they did eventually settle and fully deserved to pull a goal pack when Patrick's cross/shot was turned in by William.

As the team's confidence grew they started to play some nice football that clearly unsettled Hurstpierpoint who responded with a highly aggressive approach, foul play and absuive language, which in my opinion was an absolute disgrace. However, regrettably the tactic seemed to work as they extended their lead just before the break.

In the second-half we started well but were undone by two long range shots that managed to find the one spot in the goal that Nathan couldn't reach.

However, to the teams credit despite the aggresiveness of Hurstpierpoint the team fought back and narrowed the deficit when Max L curled home a shot from the edge of the box.

As the team pushed forward in search of more goals they did get caught out on the break twice to leave the result in no doubt.

Some bright spells today but we were ultimately punished for a disastrous first ten minutes and an inability to stand up to the aggresive behaviour of the opposition.

Sat , 15 U12 League: Royal United 3 v 3 Storrington Vipers
Well, we enjoyed an entertaining game of football today, and although we could and should have been in an unassailable lead by half time, Storrington showed why they are near the top of the table with us.

Jeff, Dave & I have been working on the boy’s communication during matches and there was a definite improvement, although we still need to become more vocal. We also have to learn to release the ball sooner, as today we got caught far too many times with the ball, when we should be looking up and passing.

However, let’s not take anything away from the boys today, as they dominated the first half. After some good early pressure, Alex Taylor was put through but saw his effort go just over. But it wasn’t long before we took the lead when Alex was again put through on the right and as the keeper came out; he cleverly put the ball over his diving body, 1-0.

Royals were playing some lovely football and when Chris Keeble picked up the ball broke past the Storrington defence he slotted a perfect ball to Alex who saw his shot hit the post and run across the line. The Storrington defence only half cleared and Lewis Clark was on hand to tuck the ball into the corner. 2-0. We continued to exert pressure and Chris Keeble again broke down the left and his shot was saved by their keeper and Lewis Clark again popped up but missed by inches.

The Royals defence were caught a couple of times pushing to far forward and when their striker got through and out-muscled our player, Aaron Chaplin pulled off a great save. However, Storrington got a goal back when their well struck effort went in with Aaron only able to get his finger tips to the ball.

With 5 minutes remaining of the first half, a great delivery across the visitor’s goal mouth saw Chris Keeble 6 yards out but as the ball rose just in front of him, he saw his effort agonisingly go just over. However, he did make up for it when seconds later he drilled Royals 3rd goal from 18 yards to see us go in 3-1 at half time.

After some lacklustre performances, I have to say the boys really did up their game today, seeing us play like we did in the first half of the season. The midfield unit of Will Jones, Jacob Waller, Luke Polie & Lewis Clark were running the show, with some very attractive passing, linking in well with our strikers.

The defence of Reiss Blackwood, Jamie Puddicombe, Harry Garman & Joshua Wood looked solid.

Again, we started strongly in the second half, still looking to put the opposition under pressure and we could have further increased our lead when Harry Garman’s volley again went agonisingly wide.

Storrington never gave up though and got 2 goals back in the second half, to finish 3-3.

An improved performance today lads, but there’s still a lot more to come from us and with our last game against Dorking Saints Puma’s early next month, I’ll be looking to finish with a good win.

Many thanks to Jeff Bartle for running the line and Dave Waller who refereed the game today.

   U13 League: Horsham Sparrow 2 v 2 Royal United
An early effort well saved by jj in the royals goal was the only chance on goal from Sparrows until 3 minutes from half time. In between Royals produced some of their best football of the season. Fluent passing, determined tackling and all round great team work meant that we dominated the first half. Alex and Lewis produced some great passing moves and set up Callum, Luke and Dro for good chances that somehow failed to go in thanks to some great keeping from the Sparrows number 1.Unbelievably, we went in the at the break not in front but behind as Sparrow broke well and produced a great long range looping effort that gave JJ no chance.

The boys then rallied well at half time and within 5 minutes of the restart we were level after Callum worked his magic and sent a scorching shot in to the bottom corner. Inspired by this the lads poured on the pressure but again were undone against the run of play. A cross from the right went loose in the box and eventually fell to the Sparrow striker to put us behind again. A moment of madness from the same striker led to him getting his marching orders and from then on we laid siege to the Sparrows goal. Callum, Dro, Stephen and Josh all went close before Man of the Match Alex popped up at the far post following good work by Josh on the left and he smashed home the equaliser. More chances came our way but somehow we just could not apply the final touch. The draw should give the boys heart as this was a fantastic display of good football.

Keep it up lads one of your best displays of the season.
   U15 League: Ashurst Wood 3 v 5 Royal United
In an incident packed match, the boys secured another three points in defeating Ashurst Wood 5-3.

James Callaby opened the scoring with a superb finish after being put through by Ryan Gay. The game however, was then delayed for nearly an hour after an Ashurst Wood player suffered a serious injury. We would like to take this opportunity to wish him a speedy recovery.

Ashurst Wood equalised after the first half resumed, but another James Callaby finish ensured the boys led 2-1 at half time.

The boys early pressure in the second half was rewarded when Dan Drazek increased the lead. However, a determined Ashurst Wood soon reduced the arrears. Alex Hughes then restored the goal advantage when his stinging shot proved too hot for the goal keeper to handle.

A further goal from Ashurst Wood set up an exciting finish, but the boys secured the points when Matt Mason flicked on Conor May's throw in to James Callaby, who then completed his hat trick.

Well done to all the boys for another gritty performance and in particular Tom Carvell who stood in at centre half for the whole game.

U12 Plate Semi: Royal United 2 v 5 Lingfield Youth
Today's plate semi final ended in defeat for Royals, after a lack lustre first 30 minutes. Lingfield scored after 3 minutes and then doubled their lead moments later. However, after some excellent passing by Royals, we opened Lingfield up with a super pass to Alex Taylor who superbly chipped the on-rushing keeper from 20 yards to bring the score back to 2-1.

Lingfield, who are the biggest side we've ever come up against were content to play the ball from their defence over the midfield for their strikers to run onto, but we weren't competing for the ball as we should. They won a corner and although we cleared the ball away, we allowed the opposition far to much time and they scored. Half time ended again with another corner and their big midfield player scored a thumping header, which I would have been proud of. 4-1 at half time.

The second half we then had the wind behind us and it was pleasing as we started to play a bit of football and although Lingfield went 5-1 up, Royals continued to dominate for periods and were rewarded with a second goal when Alex Taylor finished off a good move.

The final score of 5-2 was a fair reflection on the game, but the Royals players know we can play better than that and I now expect to win the final 2 league games of the season to finish 3rd.

It was also pleasing for the boys, as they welcomed back Jonny Washington-Jones who has been out for several weeks with a broke wrist.

   U14 League: Royal United 9 v 0 Lingfield
Following the disappointment of last weeks game being forfeited by Storrington the Under 14's delivered a thrilling performance to beat Lingfield 9-0.

The team was simply on fire today and they dominated the first half with some terrific passing football. A first half hat-trick from Max L and goals from Patrick, Max V and Max D gave the team a healthy 6-0 advantage at half-time and yet it was no more than the team deserved for producing a great team performance.

In the second-half Max L quickly made it 7-0 and Patrick added 2 more to complete his hat-trick to round off the scoring.

However despite a clearly thrilling attacking performance today what was also pleasing was the defensive performance. Despite the final score Lingfield did put us under a fair amount of pressure and the clean sheet was well earnt by a solid defensive performance from everyone today.

Well done everyone and keep up the hard work.

   U15 League: Royal United 4 v 1 Billingshurst
The boys continued on from last week's victory with another impressive win in the league.

Despite some early Royal's pressure, it was Billingshurst who took the lead mid way through the first half. However the boys kept Billingshurst pegged back in their own half and Matt Mason's corners and free kicks were a constant threat. From one of the corners, Billingshurst defence panicked resulting in an own goal to level the scores.

The boys were much more impressive in the second half with Dan Drazek a constant threat on the left wing and Sam Freeman in great form in mid field. Continual pressure was rewarded when Ryan Gay finished from close range to give Royals the lead. Further anxiety in the Billingshurst defence caused by a corner resulted in Nick Jones scoring for the first time this season.

Royals secured the win with a Tom Carvell special from ten yards which nearly burst the net.

Well done boys an excellent all round performance for the second week running.

   U15 League: Royal United 3 v 0 Roffey Robins
A strong well organised performance by the boys resulted in a convincing 3-0 win over local rivals Roffey.

The boy's early pressure was rewarded when Ryan Gay opened the scoring from close range. Despite going close on a number of occasions, particularly James Callaby's effort which hit the post, the boys had to settle for a 1-0 lead at half time.

The second half started as the first half ended with Royals on top. Alex Hughes was a constant threat on the right wing and James Callaby continued to run the Roffey defence ragged. The boys eventually increased their lead when substitute Matt Probin, was pulled down in the penalty area and James Callaby converted the penalty.

James Callaby and Matt Mason both had excellent efforts which came back off the bar but eventually, the boys scored a third when Matt Probin drove into the box and finished well from close range.

A great performance overall and well done in particular to the defence for keeping a clean sheet.

   U13 League: Royal United 4 v 7 Steyning Strikers
A disappointing result for the boys today as they showed some real promise from the start and despite falling behind early on they came back well and were still in the game until the last 10 minutes. Playing against the wind in the first half we struggled to judge the long ball and were caught out twice early on but even when we went 3-0 down the lads still battled well in the hope that the change round would turn the tide. We pulled a goal back after 25 minutes when Alex fed Dro well on the left and as he cut inside he laid an inch perfect ball across to Martin who fired in well from 15 yards out. Spirits lifted by the goal we settled down much more and both Chris H & Ben found plenty of round to work down the flanks. As has so often happened this season just when we get back in a game we lose a goal and so it was to be again today as Steyning created the opening to make the score 4-1. Again the boys came back at Steyning and just before the break Callum hit a beautiful looping shot giving the keeper no chance.

With 6 goals in the first half you could be forgiven for thinking the second half should provide plenty more however, having been under pressure for most of the first half we turned the game around and spent most of the first 20 minutes of the second half in the Steyning part of the pitch. We had our chances and dominated for long periods thanks to great work by Man of the Match Luke, Alex & Dro but as so often has happened we just couldn’t get the break we needed. There were real signs that Steyning may have been cracking and had we made it 4-3 the game could have been ours for the taking, but it wasn’t to be. As we pushed up then so the gaps appeared and Steyning punished us with a breakaway goal to make it 5-2. Straight from the kick off, ironically, Callum got the goal we had been desperate for to make it 5-3 but it was too late. A couple of late goals for Steyning and one for us slightly flattered Steyning but few could doubt that they deserved their victory.

Another extremelly encouraging team performance today with everyone contributing to some delightful football to secure an impresive victory against Division B championship contenders Brockham Badgers.

The excellent pitch conditions this week certainly helped and in the first half the team simply blew away the oppostion with an impressive display of passing and movement.

Max V opened the scoring with a delightfully curled finish past the advancing keeper and Max L extended the lead when he lobbed the keeper from 25 yards.

Patrick made it 3-0 when Tim pulled a cross back from the right and William completed the scoring in the first half when he was put through by Max L.

The second half started brightly when Patrick saw his ferocious shot from the edge of the box go in off the post to make it 5-0.

However, despite a generally assured defensive performance today a lack of communication did allow Brockham to pull one back.

Although the team continued to create chances the Brockham keeper made a number of good saves to prevent us from extending our lead. But an excellent performance from everyone today and we need to make sure we play in the same positive manner when the league programme starts again next week.

   U14 Friendly: Twin Oaks 0 v 2 Royal United
After yet another long break due to the weather it was great to see the team playing again and to welcome back Theo after his long absence due to a broken arm.

Despite a very bumpy pitch both teams tried to play passing football but clear chances were hard to come by and the teams were locked at 0-0 at half time.

In the second half the pitch started to thaw out and the ball started rolling a bit better. Gradually Royal's started to control the game but it took a mazy dribble and an excellent finish from Patrick to finally break the deadlock.

As time ticked away Theo added a second from a corner when Twin Oaks failed to clear and Williams shot from the edge of the box found Theo in space who made no mistake in ensuring the game was safe.

A controlled performance today on a very difficult surface. Well Done.

Sat , 09 U12 Plate: Royal Utd 3 v 2 Roffey Robins Athletic
The boys got back to winning ways today, when they beat Roffey Robins Athletic 3-2 to progress to the semi-final of the plate cup. In a fiercely fought contest, Roffey took the lead after Royals found it hard to get any clear cut chances. However, that only seemed to make the boys more determined and it was pleasing to see the boys pass the ball around the pitch, as we started to control the game.

Chris Keeble got his first of the season before half time, when he broke down the middle and tucked it away. On another day, we could have gone in a few goals in front, but credit to Roffey; they were playing some good football as well, making a very entertaining spectacle for all the supporters watching.

The team talk at half time was all about continuing to play the ball to feet, using the wide players and not giving the opposition any time on the ball. Chris Keeble nearly got a second but the pressure was from Royals and we started to dominate. We spent most of the half attacking the opposition goal and it was a 22 yard belter from Joshua Wood that flew over the keepers ahead to see Royals take a deserved lead.

We went further ahead when Alex Taylor broke and chased the ball down. His challenge outside the box against their goalkeeper and defender saw the ball fall at Luke Polie’s feet and he controlled the ball and slid the ball home. 3-1.

We kept up the pressure, but Roffey got another with 5 minutes left to make for an entertaining finish, but Royals held on for a thoroughly deserved win.

The whole team played well today, but the midfield of Will Jones, Guy Packham, Jacob Waller & Man of the Match Lewis Clark were exceptional and controlled the game for us today.

Well done boys and you can now look forward to a semi final.

Sat , 02 U13 Plate: Royal United 0 v 5 Broadbridge Heath
So now we must concentrate on staying in the B league after we were knocked out of the plate by Broadbridge Heath. Despite the score line suggesting otherwise we were in this game up until the last 10 minutes. The boys matched their opponents in the first half as both teams created chances but neither could apply the finishing touch. In fairness Heath probably had more chances but ours were clearer cut and we should have lead at the break. Alex provided some great through balls from midfield and he and Dro dominated the middle of the park. However for the second time in a row we conceded in the last minute of the first half. Heath broke down the right and as they cut the ball back the resultant shot struck the post, rebounded along the goal line and crept in off the other post.

Although the Royals heads dropped initially they lifted themselves for the second half and tried so hard to get back in the game. Again chances came our way as Callum, Luke and Dro had efforts saved but with our confidence struggling at present we just couldn’t get the break we needed. Jordon did well to snuff out Heath attacks in defence but he could do nothing to prevent the second goal as a corner was floated to the far post and their tall striker headed powerfully in to make it 2-0 with just 12 minutes left. At this point we had nothing to loose, so switching to 3 up front we went in search of a goal to get us back in it. Man of the Match Luke worked hard to create an opening but again the final ball just wouldn’t run for us and when Heath made it 3-0 with 8 minutes left we knew our plate run was at an end. With things stretched at the back two more goals were added late on but this flattered Heath somewhat.

A good effort lads and lets hope we can get something from Heath when we play them in the league.

Game 2 Cranleigh 3 v 3 Royal United
U14 League: Roffey Robins Utd 3 v 2 Royal United
The team put in an excellent performance today but although they managed to score three good goals they still unfortuantely lost the game 3-2.

The match was evenly contested by the two teams but Roffey took first blood after 20 minutes from a corner when we failed to mark closely enough.

However 5 minutes later Patrick levelled the scores when he received a throw in in the box, beat the defender and neatly lobbed the keeper.

Roffey regained the lead just before the break when we had a momentary lapse of concentration and allowed the roffey attack in behind us.

In the second half Roffey extended their lead when we again failed to mark from a corner but with 20 minutes left the team really started to apply some pressure and Max V (with his first goal for the club) narrowed the deficit with a great lob from the edge of the box.

We didn't have to wait too long for Max V to get his second goal for the club when 10 minutes later he ran on to a cross and slotted passed the keeper but the referee having awarded the goal changed his mind following pressure from the Roffey manager and players and disallowed the goal for offside!

Never mind boys the scoreline may not reflect it but you played a great game today and you should all be proud of your performance.

Another extremely good performance today from the 11 boys we had available. The first half belonged to a good BBH side, who went in 1-0 at half time. The second half was all Royal United and we put all sorts of pressure on the home side, with Jonny Washington-Jones scoring the equaliser. We had a number of opportunities including Luke Polie's header which canoned off the post. I was very impressed with the attitude of the players today who battled so hard on a big pitch. BBH scored the winner with 3 minutes to go and both managers commented on what an excellent game was played and in exactly the right spirit.

Josh Gay produced a couple of great saves, the defence of Aaron Chaplin, Harry Garman, Jamie Puddicombe & Josh Wood look solid. The midfield four of Guy Packham, Jacob Waller, Lewis Clark & Jonny Washington-Jones, never stopped working trying to create the openings for the front two of Luke Polie & Chris Keeble, who on another day would have undoubtidly scored.

Again, well done to ALL the players today and Jeff, Dave & I are proud of all of you!

   U15 League: Reigate Priory 0 v 1 Royal United
After a five week absence, the boys returned to action with a league fixture at Reigate.

In difficult conditions primarily caused by high winds, the boys dominated the first half. Despite having over 80% of the possession the boys could not make their pressure count. The nearest they got was Sam Todd's superb header from Matt Mason's corner which cannoned off the bar.

The boys continued to dominate in the second half and just when it looked like they were going to have to settle for a point, Matt Mason's shot from distance at last found the net.

Well done boys for securing the three points!

   U13 League: Lingfield Youth 4 v 0 Royal United
Certainly not our best performance of the season today as we were well beaten on the day by a good Lingfield side. Nonetheless, we were not without our chances and on another day could easily have rattled in 3 or 4 goals of our own. We fell behind in the first minute when a long ball over the top of our defence was finished well and I think from then on the boys knew it would be a tough game. Within a minute JJ had given away a free kick right on the edge of the box but made amends with a fine save from the resultant kick. Despite this set back we regrouped and put the pressure on to Lingfield but it seemed like the final ball was always either too long or was blocked. Our two full backs Ben and Man of The Match Chris H snuffed out several Lingfield attacks down the wings and in turn created some good moves of our own. We’d have been pleased with1-0 at half time but unfortunately we conceded again in the last minute and at 2-0 the tie was slipping away from us.

Early in the second period we had 2 good one-on-one chances but when the keeper saved both well you could sense it was not going to be our day. The boys continued to spread the ball around well but we still just couldn’t find the final ball and as the half progressed Lindfield’s confidence grew and with our midfield pushing up to try and get us back in the game the result was put beyond doubt as we were caught by the long ball once again. Lewis, Callum and Luke all went close late on but then with virtually the last kick of the game Lindfield broke through to make it 4-0.

Never mind boys I think it just was not meant to be today. Credit to you all as you never gave up trying.

   U13 Plate: Kirdford Cougars 1 v 6 Royal United
A good solid performance this week as the boys continued to show how well they are progressing as a team. Man of the match Stephen marshalled the defence well and certainly during the first half Kirdford seldom threatened to breach the Royals goal. Indeed it was from some great defensive work by Jordon that we opened the scoring. After breaking up an attack he combined well with Ashley and then put Alex in a position to feed Luke who made no mistake. Three minutes later and we were two up as Alex fired in from 15 yards. Chances continued to come although Callum found it hard to beat the offside trap when he finally did he punished Kirdford so that we went in 3-0 at the break.

Despite kicking down hill in the second half we made hard going of things early on and Kirdford created some good chances that could well have put us under some pressure had they gone in. Nonetheless, we stuck at the task before us and although the Kirdford keeper pulled off a string of outstanding saves from Jack, twice, Luke, Callum & Dro he could do nothing to stop us stretching our lead when Callum fired home after good work from Jack, Josh and Luke. Luke then hit an unstoppable shot from 18 yards to make it 5-0. Kirdford did pull one back which to be fair was well deserved as they never gave up the chase but just before time Luke completed his hat-trick to put us in the next round.

   U14 League: Copthorne 9 v 2 Royal United
With 7 players missing today a makeshift side put in a brave effort today.

Unfortunately we continue to struggle to put out a settled central defensive three despite the squad having 7 players that want to play in these positions. With only 2 of the 7 available today that lack of continuity was severly exposed by the lively Copthorne attack.

However, despite the scoreline the team was not outplayed and on another day we could have scored 9 ourselves if we had shown a bit more composure in front of goal. Although the team were not helped by a pitch that resembled the Somme and the lack of a single decision in their favour from the referee.

Hopefully we can put this one behind us and bounce back next week.

   U12 League: Royal United 2 v 6 Lingfield Youth
This was a game of two halves, against without a doubt the best team we have played at 11-a-side. Not only were the Lingfield team physically big, they also played very neat, flowing football.

Unfortunately, both Jonny Washington-Jones & Guy Packham were feeling a bit under the weather (obviously celebrating Christmas & New Year a bit much!), but both were determined to start. We got off to a bit of a slow start, with Lingfield passing the ball well, but there wasn’t many chances being created, until after about 15 minutes when we conceded a goal after being caught a defender short at the back. We then seemed to up our game a bit and started to work the ball out from the back with some flowing football, but Lingfield caught us on the break again and a thunderous shot flew in the top corner and saw Royals 2-0 down at half time.

A couple of changes were made at half time and we asked the boys to show some real character in the second half. However, within a couple of minutes Lingfield had scored a third and soon after got a fourth.

All credit has to go to the boys, as from then we woke up from that New Year hangover and not only raised our game 100%, supporting each other and making the ball do the work, we started to challenge for every ball. Lingfield caught us out to go 5-0 up, but Chris Keeble nearly got one back when a great through ball by Harry Garman saw Chris strike a lovely effort, only for their keeper to pull of a good save.

With Royals dominating, Lingfield got another, but to their credit, the boy’s heads didn’t drop and they continued to take the game to the opposition. We had a few corners today, and they were delivered superbly by both Jacob Waller & Josh Wood and our first goal came from another fine delivery, which saw the impressive Lewis Clark hit a sweet volley from 10 yards to go 6-1.

With all the pressure coming from Royals, we got another corner and this saw Guy Packham poke the ball home after Lingfield were put under more pressure. With minutes to go we saw another 3 efforts just go over or wide, including a shot from Luke Polie which agonisingly went millimetres wide.

As I said, this was the hardest game we’ve played and with a fantastic, workmanlike effort in the later stages of the game; we know we can still mix it with the best! We’ve got Roffey Robins Athletic in the quarter finals of the Cup next week, so will be looking to bounce back from this and progress to the semi finals.

Harry Garman, Lewis Clark, Jacob Waller, Luke Polie & Chris Keeble all had very good games, but Man of the Match has to go to Will Jones, whose commitment was second to none.

Very unlucky boys, but I was proud with all your efforts and the score line could have been a lot closer. WELL DONE!
