A fantastic result for the boys this morning as at last we produced a complete performance that saw us dominate this game and create a hat full of chances. We opened the scoring in the 3rd minute when a great move started in midfield as Dro fed the ball wide to Josh on the right and as he cut inside the defender he unleashed a fierce shot in to the bottom right hand corner. Straight from the kick off we spread the ball this time to the left and some neat work between Lewis and Luke allowed the latter to fire in from 15 yards. Clearly caught cold by this Colts then began to settle down however, Stephen and Jordon in Royals defence mopped up any threat. We maintained control in midfield thanks to Dro and Alex and before half time Luke, Callum, Alex and Dro all had shots well saved by the impressive Colts keeper. Right on half time Luke was pulled down in the area and up stepped Dro to put 3-0 up at the break.

The boys were clearly lifted by the outstanding first half and although we lost Jordon to a leg injury, Martin stepped in and held the defensive line well. On the few occasions Colts put us under pressure JJ was quick off his line to clear up any danger. Throughout the second period time an again we had chances to put the game well beyond Colts reach but somehow the ball just would go in. Man of the Match Callum on any other day could have had 4 or 5 but his luck was clearly not in today. With 10 minutes left Colts finally broke through our defence and although JJ pulled off a fine first save he could do nothing to stop the follow up. Even then we still created 3 or 4 more good chances with George working really well down the right flank but in the end we were happy to come away with the 3 points.
   U14 League: Royal United 1 v 3 Ockley United
With injuries and illness still affecting the side the team got off to a great start when Max L finished superbly from the edge of the box after 15 minutes.

Ockley came back strongly and although they enjoyed a lot of possession they didn't threaten our goal as the team defended stoutly.

Max L then had a great chance to make it 2-0 from a corner but he unfortunately lifted his shot just over the bar.

With half-time approaching it looked like we would go in at the break with a slim advantage so it was unfortunate that we made a rare mistake to allow Ockley to equalise.

In the second half Max V had a great chance to give Royals the lead again when he broke clear but his shot went narrowly over the bar.

However, it was Ockley that took the lead with 20 minutes left when a long range shot found the top corner.

Max D almost levelled the scores a few minutes later when he hit a fierce shot from the edge of the box but the Ockley keeper held on to the ball well.

With time running out Ockley were awarded a late penalty to give them a result that unfortunately didn't do justice to the teams performance today even though Ockley probably did deserve the three points.

Unfortunately this game was again marred by the behaviour of the opposition players and spectators who constantly questioned every referee's decision that didn't go their way.

Regrettably this would seem to be something we are going to have to get used to!

Have a good Christmas everyone and see you in the New Year.

U9 League: Royal United 2 v 2 St Pauls Panthers
Game 2 Royal United 0 v 6 St Pauls panthers
   U12 League: Heron Olympic 1 v 7 Royal United
Not sure how I managed to get anything written down today, as my fingers ceased up due to the bitter weather!

Anyway, we came up against Heron Olympic knowing that we needed a good win to keep up with the top two teams and on this cold Saturday morning, we seemed to take a while before getting into our stride and settling down. It was an even first 10 minutes, but then we started to play a bit of football, using the flanks, with Guy Packham & Jonny Washington-Jones consistently beating the defence and delivering good crosses. The ever-impressive central midfield pairing of Jacob Waller & Lewis Clark were dominating the midfield and it was a perfectly weighted through ball from Jacob that saw Chris Keeble’s effort well saved by the Heron keeper. We were starting to look more dangerous and Guy Packham had an effort cleared off the line, but although it took us 15 minutes to settle down playing up the slope, it seemed only a matter of time. Then we got our first goal, when a quick throw in to Jacob Waller who beat a defender and crossed the perfect delivery to Guy Packham to head into the net to open the scoring, 1-0.

Then towards the end of the half, Jacob Waller combined well with Lewis Clark and sent Alex Taylor through to make it 2-0 and that’s how the half finished.

The team talk this week was about keeping the back line pushed up, not giving the opposition any room and for the strikers to harass the defenders.

Early in the second half, which saw Harry Garman put another defence splitting ball through to Alex Taylor who then made it 3-0. It then wasn’t long before a quick goal kick by Aaron Chaplin went to Jacob Waller, whose pass found Guy Packham who in turn setup Alex Taylor to complete another hat-trick when he slipped it passed the advancing keeper. We then could have increased the lead, before Heron Olympic got a consolation when they broke away from our defence to score. I would just like to say that our defence today of Will Jones, Reiss Blackwood, Josh Wood, Jamie Puddicombe and ‘captain’ Harry Garman, have been absolutely fantastic all season so far. We know we can score goals, but we have on the whole, looked very comfortable defending.

Back to the game…. Royals weren’t finished and Lewis Clark connected to another Jacob Waller corner to make it 5-1, before Jacob setup Alex Taylor for his fourth. Then, as time was ticking away, Lewis Clark got his second, with a long range effort which the keeper could do nothing about.

Final score 7-1 and a comfortable win.

Well done ALL of you today and I’d just like to say have a fabulous Christmas & a happy New Year. Remember, training recommences on Wednesday 2nd January and our next game is on 5th January 2008, against league high-flyers, Lingfield Youth.

   U12 League: Billingshurst Youth 3 v 1 Royal United
If you look at the score, it doesn't do ourselves justice today. We were missing 4 regular team members today, due to unfortunate circumstances & players away, but the 12 players I had available did themselves proud and although the first half was a bit scrappy, we didn't deserve to be 2-0 down. The first 10 minutes started really brightly for Royals, with Will Jones partnering the impressive Jacob Waller in the centre of midfield, Chris Keeble up front with Aaron Chaplin and Lewis Fowler in defence. We could have been 2 up by the time Billingshurst scored their first and although we were not playing as well as normal, we still should have not gone in at half time 2-0, as Billingshurst scored right on the stroke of half-time. The ever reliable Jamie Puddicombe & Harry Garman were doing all they could to break down any Billingshurst threat, but because of the enforced changes, we didn't gel straight away.

The second half required Royals to go on the attack, but the home side increased their lead early on. However, this only spurred on Royals and with 25 minutes left, Royals completely dominated preceedings. Chris Keeble, with a new-found confidence, was highly impressive and a good run by him saw a perfect cross for Guy Packham to tuck the ball away, 3-1.
More pressure came from Royals, but good defending from Billy saw the goal attempts cleared, two great clearances off the line and several shots went agonisingly wide.
It wasn't going to be our day, but the boys did themselves proud and I have to take my hat off to them for battling away and never giving up. That's the spirit I expect from these players and the boys today showed me that.

Well done to all of you!!

Sat , 24 U14 League: Hurstpierpoint 1 v 0 Royal United
Despite recording our best ever result against the league leaders the team deserved better having delivered a tremendous performance today.

Under a lot of pressure in the first-half the team defended resolutely and limited Hurstpierpoint to a few half chances. Ben Le and Charlie again proving very effective at the centre of defence.

However, we always looked dangerous on the break and Max L was unlucky not to open the scoring when his shot just went wide of the far post.

In the second-half Hurstpierpoint took the lead after 10 minutes when we struggled to clear a corner. But the team showed how much they have matured when they took this setback in their stride and started to put the Hurstpierpoint defence under a lot of pressure in search of an equaliser.

As the game wore on Royals seemed to grow in confidence and as Patrick and William began to get control of the midfield it only seemed a matter of time before we would get the equaliser.

All of the team were combining well and the quick accurate passing created a number of chances but no one could make the breakthrough and despite Max L going close in the dying moments of the game from a Ben Le corner Hurstpierpoint held on to claim all three points.

A great performance today from everyone that deserved at least a point. Well done.

   U15 League: Billingshurst 0 v 5 Royal United
A storming performance by the boys saw them score five times against Billingshurst.

After an early scare, the boys took the lead when James Callaby converted from the penalty spot following a hand ball by a Billingshurst defender. The boys then settled down and started to play some really good football. Their efforts were rewarded when Alex Hughes and Ryan Gay both scored in quick succession from close range.

The lead could have been greater before half time when Matt Mason's sizzler from distance just cleared the bar. However the boys had to be content with a 3-0 half time lead.

Continuing on with their excellent performance, the defence of Brandan Nye, Conor May, Nick Jones and Asher Jenkins again kept the Billingshurst attack at bay throughout the second half. Whenever Billingshurst did sneak a chance they found keeper James Hatton in superb form.

Further goals from James Callaby and Alex Hughes completed the scoring with Dan Drazek and Matt Mason once again going close from distance.

Congratulations boys on a really excellent performance - you were superb in every position on the pitch today!

Today's team : James Hatton, Brandan Nye, Sam Todd, Conor May, Nick Jones, Asher Jenkins, Ryan Gay, Matt Mason, Sam Freeman, Dan Drazek, Matt Probin, James Callaby, Alex Hughes

Sat , 17 U9 League: East Grinstead 0 v 7 Royal United
A fantastic performance saw the boys continue to play in the same way they finshed the last match.
Some superb passing saw us take a 3-0 lead at half time with goals from Daniel, Sam and an OG.Mat B on the right always looked threatening and scored a great goal with a header ( unheard of ) following a cross from Sam.Adam in midfield and Gareth and Chris in defence worked really hard and gave the opposition no time on the ball.Mat V in goal looked comfortable and saved everything thrown at him.Second half saw Daniel score a further 2 and hit the post several times and Mat B score 2.
Well done boys we look forward to next week.

Game 2 East Grinstead 3 v 0 Royal United

A very close game saw both sides in the first half create several chances with Sam and Kristian going close.East Grinstead eventually scored however Thomas made some great saves. Half Time 1-0.Second half saw Joseph and George go close whilst Charlie and Josh looked solid in defence. Finally as we pushed forward they caught us twice on the break but we never gave up.
   U12 League: Albury Eagles 5 v 1 Royal United
We were 2-0 down at half time, although the scoreline really did flatter Albury, as we could easily have been 6-2 in front. Got a goal back early in the second half, before Luke Polie landed awkwardly and broke his metatarsal. He will be out for upto 6 weeks.

Then as we had Albury under intense pressure we had 2 players dismissed from the field. Unfortunately, we had lost toal concentration and conceded 3 more goals to lose 5-1.

Goalscorer: Lewis Clark

Man of the match: Jonny Washington-Jones

   U13 League: Royal Utd 3 v 4 Horsham Sparrows
The lads were so disappointed after this result as we had showed so much character to come back from 3-0 down at half time. We started brightly enough and both teams had their chances. It was half way through the first half when Sparrows thought they’d taken the lead only for an offside flag to be raised. Then everything seemed to change in just 10 minutes. First Sparrows were awarded a penalty for handball and after converting that we lost momentum and allowed them two more chances that they finished off well. There were some fantastic defensive challenges going in especially from Martin & Jordon whilst Dro shot narrowly wide and Callum saw a couple of long range efforts well saved.

The lads really lifted themselves in the second half and right from the kick off put Sparrows under pressure. Within 5 minutes we were back in the game as Callum struck home from 18 yards out. At last we had some belief and inspirational work from Dro & Alex in midfield meant we had the majority of the ball. It was Dro who picked up the ball on half way and despite pleas from his team mates and I have to confess me to pass, he proceeded to dance round 5 or 6 tackles before planting his shot in the net for 2-3. Several more chances came our way but the Sparrows defence seemed to be holding out before a clearance from a corner fell to Stephen who let fly from all of 35 yards to loop the ball over the Sparrows keeper 3-3. Although happy with a draw the boys pushed on and with just 10 minutes left won a penalty after handball. Sadly for us the keeper saved well and probably gave Sparrow a bit of a boost as 2 minutes later a rare attack was finished off well 3-4. Still we weren’t out of it and with the last kick of the game an absolute screamer from Alex 15 yards out scrapped the outside of the post.

A tremendous turn around from half time and the sort of attitude that we must have more of if we are to move up the table. Great effort lads I thought you deserved more from the game today.

Man of Match: Stephen (What a goal – and on your birthday!!)
   U14 Friendly: Royal United 4 v 3 Albury Eagles
With only 13 players fit and available today the game got off to a bad start when James had to be withdrawn in the first 5 minutes with a back injury.

Albury were quick to take advantage of the reshuffled defence and took the lead after 10 minutes. However, the new look defence of Adam, Charlie, Ben Le and Ben L did begin to settle and Royals played their way back in to the game with some terrific passing football.

Chris levelled the scores after 25 minutes, with his 3rd goal in four games, when Max L played an inch perfect pass in to the inside right channel for Chris to finish smartly.

But Albury regained the initiative just before the break when the whole team seemed to go asleep at a corner and the Albury striker had a free header from 4 yards.

Worse was to come when Albury started the 2nd half much the brighter side and immediately extended their lead. However, just when it looked like Albury were going to gain the initiative the whole team seemed to find an extra gear and finally took control of the game.

With the new look defence getting to grips with the lively Albury attack the midfield and forwards retained possesion well and started to put Albury under a lot of pressure.

Max L reduced the defecit with 25 minutes to play when Patrick played a beautifully weighted pass through. Ten minutes later and Max L and Patrick again combined to level the scores.

Patrick then showed great commitment when having defended a corner he sprinted the length of the pitch to get on the end of a long clearance from the goalkeeper (Nathan) but he pulled his shot wide.

But the winner came 10 minutes from the end when again Patrick released Max L to fire home.

With the clock ticking down the defence stood firm and the team completed an impressive comeback.

A disappointing performance resulted in the boys going down 3-1 to Ashurst Wood.

Although the boys had most of the play in the first half, they failed to convert the chances they had and found themselves 1-0 down at the break.

Matters improved early in the second half when Ryan Gay's cross was headed in superbly by substitute Matt Probin. The boys always looked the more likely team to go on and win, but were sunk by two Ashurst Wood goals in the last three minutes.

Never mind boys, let's look to improve next week.

Sat , 10 U9 League: Royal United 6 v 2 Horsham Sparrows
A great game with both sides playing some good football. We started off well with a great passing move between MatB Adam & Sam resulting in a goal for Sam. Sam proceeded to score 3 more during the match with Mat B getting 2.
Mat V in goal and Gareth & Chris in defence were superb whilst Daniel created space up front.
In summary the passing and movement created opportunities and a well deserved win.

Game 2 Royal United 2 v 4 Horsham Sparrows

A game we should have won and which we led 2-1 with goals from Joseph and MatB. Again a good performance with kristian in goal having little to do most of the time. Thomas & George were solid in defence with Charlie and Joseph strong in midfield whilst Jayden chased everything upfront.
   U14 Cup: Royal United 1 v 2 Upper Beeding
The under 14's narrowly missed out on progressing to the next round of the cup in a keenly contested game against a very strong Upper Beeding team.

Royal's nearly got the perfect start when Max D was sent clear in the first minute but the keeper managed to save with his legs and Max L fired the rebound just over.

The game was evenly contested after that with few chances. However, Upper Beeding took the lead after 20 minutes when a deep cross to the far post was unfortunately turned in to his own goal by Tim as he tried to clear whilst under pressure from an Upper Beeding player.

The game remained tight but we did have chances to level the score but couldn't find the finishing touch.

In the second half Upper Beeding put us under a lot of pressure looking for the killer second goal but the defence stood firm and gradually more chances to level the score were made.

Max L made excellent progress on the left and twice pulled the ball back across the goal but each time he didn't manage to find a Royals player.

However with 10 minutes left the breakthrough arrived when Ben L crossed from the left. Max D flicked the ball on to William who finished smartly in to the corner.

However, thinking we had done enough to earn extra time the team switched off and gave Upper Beeding too much space. Unfortunately Upper Beeding capitalised on the extra space we gave them and struck a stunning winner from 30 yards out.

   U15 Cup: Broadbridge Heath 4 v 0 Royal United
A disappointing performance resulted in the boys being eliminated from this years cup competition.

The boys started well and nearly scored in the opening minutes but went behind soon after to a soft goal. Both sides had chances throughout the first half but surprisingly there were no further goals before half time.

The boys went further behind early in the second half and responded with some long range efforts from James Callaby, Alex Hughes, Matt Mason and Dan Drazek but all found the Broadbridge goalkeeper in fine form.

Captain, Conor May went close on 2 occasions with headers from corners, but could not keep up his recent goal scoring form.

The boys continued to press but conceded 2 late goals to leave the final score 4-0.

Never mind boys we can now concentrate on the league!

Yet another major improvement in our performance this season and at last we are beginning to play the sort of passing football we had threatened to do from day one. Our movement, calling, tackling and crisp passing saw us dominate a game the could have proved a bit of a banana skin based on some of our earlier efforts this season. The presence of Alex & Dro in midfield along with the defensive control of Stephen & Martin gave us plenty of the ball and Callum & Chris A up front made sure they wasted few of the early chances. It was Callum who opened the scoring in the 3rd minute after being put through by Chris. Then it was Chris who made it two when the impressive Lewis combined well with Callum and Chris stroked the ball home from 18 yards. We could afford a missed penalty before Callum, Lewis, Alex, Stephen and an own goal gave us a comfortable 7-0 lead at half time.

Rather than let up at this point we continued to press for more goals. Despite missing a couple of good chances Callum still managed to net another five times to finish with an impressive seven for the day. Time and again throughout the half Man of the Match Alex won the ball in midfield and between him, Dro and Lewis they set up opportunities for Callum. Ashley was unlucky not to score his first this season as his header from Callums’ corner was deflected past the keeper by a defender for an own goal. Alex rounded things off for us although Dro had a couple of good efforts well saved against his former team. Not for the first time praise has to go to our defence as Ben and stand-in right backs George & James limited Tigers chances and on the two or three occasions they did break through JJ was equal to anything they could throw at him.

I must give credit to Tigers as they showed great team spirit throughout the game but Royals were in the grove today and at last look like we have hit some form. Well done again lads for a thoroughly disciplined performance.
Sat , 03 U15 League: Roffey Robins 1 v 3 Royal United
The boys resumed their league programme with a well earned victory against Roffey Robins.

After withstanding some early Roffey pressure, Royals took the lead when Alex Hughes brilliantly converted James Callaby excellent cross. Shortly afterwards Ryan Gay appeared to increase the lead but his effort was ruled offside. Nevertheless the boys increasing dominance was rewarded when James Callaby's shot from outside the box found the corner of the net.

In a tight second half, Roffey pulled one back but the boys responded immediately when Conor May headed home Matt Mason's corner. Boths teams had further chances but the score finished at 3-1 to Royals.

Well done lads for an excellent performance after the three week break.

Today's team : James Hatton, Sam Todd, Nick Jones, Conor May, Tom Carvell, Ryan Gay, Matt Mason, Sam Freeman, Dan Drazek, Matt Probin, Alex Hughes, James Callaby

   U13 League: Steyning Strikers 3 v 1 Royal United
An amazing improvement in the lads performance over previous weeks and but for a little bit more luck and belief we could have come away from this game with a result. Having been forced, due to injury, to reshuffle the midfield both Dro and Man of the Match Alex Best produced a great display. Although we were put under pressure early on the lads weathered the storm and began to create our own chances. Callum thought he’d given us the lead when his effort scraped the outside of the post after 15 minutes. It was Steyning however who took the lead when a lunging challenge on JJ in the Royals goal saw the ball break to two strikers who scored with only Ben on the line. After going two behind within 5 minutes the lads could easily have given up hope but Callum had other ideas as he hit a long range effort that looked goal bound only for the ball to thump the cross bar and bounce clear. A third Steyning goal just before half time flattered things a little although they had been the stronger side during the half.

A couple of changes at half time seem to pep us up and we proceeded to dominate the second half. In defence Stephen Kidd had an inspired half as time and again he cut out the threat from Steyning early with some great challenges. Lewis Harris-Manley began to work down the left flank and had the Steyning defence back peddling. Midway through the half Royal got the goal they so richly deserved as Alex fed Dro and after skipping past a couple of defenders he unleashed an unstoppable effort to put us back in the game. Apart from one shot from Steyning that hit a post JJ had little else to do during the half as our defensive line held firm whilst at the other end Callum, Dro, Alex and Jack all had long range efforts saved by the Steyning keeper.

Although this defeat leaves us at the bottom of the table I honestly believe that if the lads put in performances like this each week we will win more games than we loose. Well done all of you for a great effort – KEEP BELIEVING AND IT WILL COME GOOD!
   U14 League: Royal United 5 v 0 Storrington
Another very encouraging performance from the team today who put Storrington under a lot of pressure.

Max D came close to opening the scoring in the 1st minute but although he went round the keeper the angle proved too difficult.

Ben P looked like he was going to open the scoring soon after when his effort was cleared off the line but the team finally got its noses in front when Ben P played in Max L for the opener.

Max L made it 2-0 five minutes later when a long pass from Edward caught out the Storrington defence.

Storrington, however, came storming back and were unlucky not to narrow the deficit before half-time but our defence stood firm and got the blocks in when it mattered.

In the second-half Royal's quickly extended their lead when Max L completed his hat-trick and although Storrington continued to threaten the defence stood firm and Max L and Patrick were able to add two further goals to complete an impressive victory.

Well done everyone today for an excellent performance.

   U12 League: Royal Utd 5 v 2 Broadbridge Heath
After the 2 week break, Royals came up against Broadbridge Heath, who last season were in Division A. Royals began positively and got back to playing attractive football, which had slightly disappeared in the last league game against Storrington, where although we won, we didn’t play anything like we are capable of. It didn’t take us long to settle down and we looked in excellent form when Luke Polie saw his effort hit the post and with Alex Taylor continuing his excellent goal-scoring record, followed up to see Royals go 1-0 in front.

The vast majority of the possession came from Royals and Alex Taylor saw his left footed effort just go over the crossbar. Then Harry Garman, who has been immense all season in defence and a captain who leads from the front, had an effort well saved by the BBH keeper, who went on to make a string of fine saves. We continued to play the ball about the park majestically, with Guy Packham, Jacob Waller, Lewis Clark & Jonny Washington-Jones dominating the middle of the park. This allowed Royals to create lots of space and we opened up the BBH defence again after a great pass by Will Jones to Alex Taylor who slipped the ball to Luke Polie whose effort went just wide of the left hand post.

I knew if we kept up the pressure and dominated possession as we had, we would continue to create more chances and the goals would come. Jonny Washington-Jones then had a good effort saved, before Luke Polie again hit the post from a tremendous long range effort, but this time Guy Packham was on hand to convert the rebound to make it 2-0. Just before half time and deservedly so, Royals made it 3-0 when Alex Taylor rounded the keeper.

The second half saw a completely different BBH take the field and they had obviously been told to close us down quickly. Even though our team talk at half time was keep playing the way we had, we needed to take control of the second half straight away. However, BBH came out and straight at us, closing us down early and making us rush possession, leading to us giving away the ball to often. Although we could have had a hatful in the first half, BBH got a deserved goal back after about 5 mins and then a well taken header got the score back to 3-2. It took about 15 minutes for Royals to get back in the grove and Alex Taylor got his hat-trick when a through ball saw him slip the ball round the advancing keeper. To finish off, we started to pressure the BBH goal again and from a quick throw-in on the right, saw Lewis Clark chip the keeper from 20 yards into the top left of the goal.

The game could have changed a few times today, we could have got a lot more in the first half, but BBH put us under a lot of pressure in the second. However, I have to say not only was that the best game of football I have seen from 2 sides this season, but the attitude and sportsmanship of the Broadbridge Heath & Royals players were excellent!

This was confirmed by our referee, Nick Washington-Jones, who commented to the BBH players & management team what an enjoyable game to referee.

Another 3 points points and now we’re 6 wins from 6 games in the league and believe it or not, I’d have taken that before the season started! It’s amazing what confidence and of course the fact we have got some tremendously skilful players.

An opportunity for the whole squad to take part in a game and they didn't disappoint with a stunning performance against Billingshurst.

Royal's dominated from the start and quickly established their superioity when Chris opened the scoring with a far post volley. Max L made it 2-0 soon after, after rounding the keeper, before Edward poked the ball home from a corner.

Max L then made it 4-0 before the break with the help of a heavy deflection from a Billingshurst player.

In the second-half we made 7 changes to the team but continued to impress extending our lead when a corner from Patrick was deflected in by a Billingshurst player. Patrick then made it 6-0 when Max L pulled the ball back to the edge of the box.

Billingshurst, however, never gave up and battled their way back in to the game narrowing the deficit from a well worked free-kick.

However, 3 late goals from Max L(2) and William put the result beyond doubt.

Game 2: Royal United 0 v 1 Horsham Sparrows
   U14 Friendly: Royal United 3 v 1 Heron Olympic
After a bright first 10 minutes Royals' traditional generosity was restored when a bad clearance across our own area gifted an easy header in to give Heron the lead.

Royals did not panic and kept creating chances until Max D was able to latch on to a short pass through from Max L to claim the first goal and level the scores.

Royals continued to have the best of the possession, and to set up a lot of chances, but the final decisive touch was so often just missing.

A number of changes were made through the game so that those with less game time to date were given opportunities, and this did lead to a little lack of fluency as passes were just missing their target.

Gradually though the boys settled and those who were less familiar with the team became more confident and passes found their mark.

It had only seemed a matter of time before Royals took the lead and this came when Chris appeared in the box to calmly finish off a lovely diagonal pass from Max D.

The game was then made secure when William met a great corner from Patrick to the edge of the penalty area and headed firmly to beat the keeper just under the bar.

Heron had continued to play football throughout and came close to pulling one back in the last few minutes, but running back towards his own goal Tom (voted man of the match by the Royals crowd) hooked a great clearance off the line.

Overrall a solid performance and Royals kept trying to play attractive attacking football, even when things did not quite click. A good performance too from those who have not played a lot this season, and who showed that given a chance they can compete for regular places.

An old cliché I know but this really was a game of two halves that at half time was in the balance and could have gone either way. I think all the supporters will agree that for the first 35 minutes we played probably our best football this season against a side a division above us. A forced reshuffled defensive line of Ben, George, Stephen & Martin produced an outstanding performance as time and again they snuffed out the Tigers attack and on the two or three occasions that they did get through they found JJ in good form in the Royals goal. Despite going behind after 15 minutes we worked hard as Alex, Callum and Luke put together some great passing moves. It was following a great run by Alex that he won us a corner and the pressure told as their defender turned it in to his own net. Five minutes later and we were ahead as neat work from Dro and Callum put Luke through and he finished well. A turning point in the game came when Callum scored what looked like a good individual goal but our celebrations were short lived as another player was penalised for being in an offside position. Within two minutes Tigers had pulled level and you could see that the lads heads began to drop a little.

Early in the second half we were caught cold by two quick moves and suddenly found ourselves with a mountain to climb at 4-2 down. Although our defence tried hard to contain things and man of the match JJ pulled off some great saves to keep the score down Tigers clearly had the bit between their teeth and piled on the pressure. As I told the boys at the end it’s all about improving and learning the game and by playing better teams they will learn more and ultimately improve.

Heads up boys lets see if we can get our name back on the Plate trophy.

Game 1: Lower Beeding 5 v 0 Royal United
Game 2: Lower Beeding 7 v 0 Royal United
U12 Cup: Royal Utd 4 v 5 Cranleigh Cougars (AET)
Today we were without Jacob Waller & rested Reiss Blackwood & Chris Keeble but gave Robert Banks, Aaron Chaplin (having recovered from his broken arm) & Lewis Fowler first starts of the season. They were all going to get full games to get them involved and they certainly didn't let themselves down or the team.
The game started well for Royals with some good early pressure and it wasn't long before the prolific Alex Taylor was cleverly put through by Lewis Clark to make it 1-0. Then Will Jones, also getting his first full game after some very good display's then put Alex through again, increasing our lead to 2-0. We could have gone further ahead when another effort after some good work by another player making his full debut, Luke Polie, saw Alex's goal bound effort cleared off the line.
Cranliegh, unbeaten in the 'C' division this year, then capitalised on a mixup in the Royals defence, to get a goal back. 2-1!
However, Alex Taylor got another hat-trick (his 4th in 5 games) when he raced clear to make the score 3-1. just before half time, Josh Gay made a great reflex save when a shot coming towards him, hit a divot, bounced up and hit his shoulder, just clearing the crossbar!
The defence of Robert Banks, Lewis Fowler, Harry Garman and Jamie Puddicombe looked comfortable and we went in 3-1 at half time.
After making a few changes to give others a run out, we lost our shape a bit and after 10 minutes Cranleigh got another goal to bring it back to 3-2. Royals could of finished just after when Lewis Clark setup Josh Wood, who had just come on, only to see his effort just creep wide.
Credit to Cranleigh, their boys kept on battling & managed to level the score with a quick break, before the final whistle.
Extra Time came and two very good long range efforts by Cranleigh saw them go into the lead. We then brought back on Alex Taylor & the influencial Lewis Clark and from good pressure saw Guy packham grab a late goal, but it was a bit to late.

The boys who played today, did very well & it shows what a good squad we have, with players in depth. Although we were missing some very good players today, we still gave a team unbeaten in division 'C' a great game.
Saying that, we can now look forward to the Plate Cup and will look to do well.

Well done all of you today!!

   U14 Cup: Forest Row 1 v 3 Royal United
The Under 14's progressed to the second round of the Cup with an excellent away win at Forest Row.

Royal's dominated much of the game with some neat passing football and took the lead in the first half when Max L crossed for Max D to round the keeper.

In the second half Patrick made it 2-0 when he picked the ball up in midfield and curled his shot in to the bottom corner from 22 yards.

Forest Row did then pull a goal back when during one of their rare attacks they were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box. No one could do anything about the perfectlly placed kick which sailed in to the top corner.

Royal's however came storming back and reestablished their two goal advantage when Adam laid a neat pass in to Max D who steered the ball home beyond the advancing keeper.

A strong performance to day from everyone and good to see a number of players who haven't played yet this season showing what they are capable of. Well done!

The boys progressed to the second round of the cup with a 3-0 win over Tigers.

A strong start saw the boys take an early lead when Alex Hughes converted from close range. Shortly afterwards James Callaby made it two from inside the box. The boys had a number of further chances and just before half time Conor May got on the end of Matt Mason's inswinging corner to give the boys a 3-0 half time lead.

Some inspired saves from the Tigers keeper kept the boys out during the second half. James Hatton also had to make some smart saves to ensure the boys kept their third consecutive clean sheet.

Well done boys for an excellent win!

Sat , 06 U14 League: Upper Beeding 4 v 1 Royal United
A much better away performance today than in our previous two away games but unfortunately no improvement in the result!

The team started much more positively and both sides competed evenly for the game but it was Upper Beeding that got the advantage after 20 minutes when a long range shot found the top corner.

The home side soon made it 2-0 with an excellent flowing move but Royals were never outplayed and deservedly pulled one back when Max V crossed for William to grab his first goal of the season.

However, just before the break some bad habits crept back in when we failed to clear the ball properly and Upper Beeding were able to go in at the break 3-1 up.

In the second half Royals started very positively and created a number of good chances. Max D came close on a number of occassions but didn't quite get the contact needed to narrow the deficit.

With 10 minutes left to play we pushed another player forward and went with 3 at the back to try and force a goal but unfortunately got caught out at the back to leave the final result flattering Upper Beeding a little bit!

   U12 League: Storrington Vipers 2 v 3 Royal United
We travelled to Storrington, with the game starting without Lewis Clark, who got lost en-route, but it was an opportunity for Luke Polie to slot into the centre of the park and he didn’t disappoint. In previous games we’ve started very strongly, but having not played the week before, we didn’t settle into our normal, fluent passing football which has impressed both the coaching staff and spectators so far this season.

It wasn’t long into the match when Royals put pressure on the Storrington defence and when half the Royals team saw the ball cross the goal line and a Storrington player pick the ball up, we thought it was back to the centre circle. However, the referee decided to give a penalty for handball instead and unfortunately for Royals, the Storrington keeper made a good save to keep the scores level. However, it wasn’t long before we took the lead when a quick free kick saw Guy Packham break clear of the defence a slot the ball home, 1-0.

Luke Polie was causing problems in the middle and with the ever energetic Jacob Waller alongside, we were creating chances. Then a break by Storrington saw them draw level, before Joshua Wood had a good effort saved by the keeper.

Another break by Storrington saw Joshua Gay make a good save and followed it up by getting to the ball quickly, only to see the ball kicked out of his hands and Storrington score from an acute angle. The whistle blew and expecting to see a free kick awarded, was quite surprised to see the goal awarded! Storrington went in at half time 2-1 in front.

The boys were unsettled by a few decisions, as I was, but we had to get on and win the game. The second half saw Lewis Clark come into the middle of the park and it wasn’t long before Alex Taylor, Chris Keeble & Jacob Waller see efforts go just wide or go straight to the keeper. However, we started to dominate after about 10 minutes and from a corner, Harry Garman got the scores back on level terms. This seemed to spark the boys and Joshua Wood saw a cracker of an effort go just wide. Luke Polie was pushed up front and was able to hold the ball, before releasing it and allowing a few surging runs from Alex Taylor, but saw his shots go wide or straight at the keeper. Storrington had a cracking effort from about 25 yards hit the crossbar, but Royals knew if they could continue putting the opposition under pressure the goal would come.

It did, another through ball from the midfield sent Alex clear and he made no mistake in making it 3-2. We could and should have been comfortable winners by the end, but the Storrington keeper had a very good game and their defence did keep battling.

Royals came out deserved 3-2 winners and can now look forward to a cup game next week.

You battled well today boys and never gave up. Because of the effort you put I was never in doubt you’d pull it round and win. Well done, a thoroughly deserved win see’s us unbeaten and still top of the table.

Thank you for all the support we got...again, fantastic!!

The boys were priviliged today to play on a perfectly lined pitch and showed their gratitude with a 6-0 win against Reigate Priory!

A storming first half saw the boys keep the Reigate goal under siege. James Callaby opened the scoring from close range and Alex Hughes made it 2-0 shortly after with a crisp finish. Further pressure was rewarded when captain Conor May bundled in Matt Mason's corner.

Despite numerous chances, the Reigate keeper played an outstanding game but could do nothing to stop James and Alex each scoring again before half time.

The great surprise about the second half was that the boys only managed one further goal with James Callaby completing his hat trick from close range. Numerous other chances were either just wide or just over and when they were on target the Reigate keeper stood firm.

An excellent performance. Well done to all the boys!

   U13 League: Royal United 9 v 7 Lingfield Youth
A great game for the spectators but not so good for the managers this one. In truth this game should have been over at half time as we led by 3-0 and were comfortably in control. The first half saw both teams with plenty of chances but it was Royals who took them as Callum began his remarkable day by opening the scoring following great work on the right by Dro. Ten minutes later and we were two up as this time Callum set up Dro as his shot was deflected in by the defender. Spreading the ball wide gave us more space and Alex was creating all sorts of trouble for Lingfield. It was Callum who popped up to make it three before the break following a lovely through ball from George. Elsewhere JJ was called upon to make two or three good saves as the Lingfield front line pushed up on us but Stephen & stand in defender Luke held firm.

We were put under a little more pressure early in the second half as Lingfield through everything at us and played with four up front for most of the half. This gave us a little more space up front and when Toby fed Lewis in midfield he laid an inch perfect through ball for Callum to complete his hat trick and at 4-0 the game looked finished. Unfortunately this couldn’t be further from the truth as Royals reshuffled their defence and two quick goals from our opponents gave them a lifeline. Almost from the restart Callum added a fifth after great work by Toby to put us back in control but a long looping free kick from Lingfield gave JJ no chance and it was game on again at 5-3. As the game ebbed & flowed Callum added his fifth only for two minutes later Lingfield to pull in back to 6-4. The influential Dro in midfield helped us to press ahead in a 10 minute purple patch as he added our 7th. Alex then deservedly opened his account as he popped in number 8 after the keeper had made a fine save and then Callum grabbed his double Hat trick to put us 9-4 up with 10 minutes left. Still Lingfield wouldn’t lay down, as they struck back with 3 goals in added time as we went to sleep in midfield leaving our defence to soak up pressure for the remainder of the game.

Well done boys we are up and running now and a special well done to man of the match Callum as for the first time since we began a double hat trick was scored.

Following last weeks disappointing start to the game the team started strongly today and competed well with a strong Roffey team.

In an evenly contested game it was Royals that took the lead after 20 minutes when Max L fired home from the edge of the box. This seemed to settle the team and they were unlucky not to extend the lead before half-time.

In the second half Roffey stormed forward in search of the equaliser and Jacob had to make an excellent save early on to keep our advantage.

However, 20 minutes in to the second half some excellent closing down from the midfield and forwards enabled Max L to break clear and double our advantage.

Roffey still pressed hard to get back in to the game but with 10 minutes left Max D broke clear on the right to slot home from a difficult angle to make it 3-0.

With the defence and midfield working hard to defend our goal it was a shame that Roffey grabbed a consolation with 5 minutes to go but the performance of the whole team today was excellent.

Well done!

Sat , 22 U14 League: Maidenbower Colts 3 v 0 Royal United
Yet again the team shot itself in the foot as they started slowly and gifted Maidenbower a goal in the 1st minute!

This is the second game this season that we have done this and lets hope the boys this time learn from it and start future games at a much higher tempo. At this level we can't afford to give teams a goal lead as it helps them settle and puts us under immediate pressure.

The team did then wake up and started to compete clawing there way back in to the game with, what at times, was quite delightful passing football.

However, Maidenbower were able to extend their lead from the penalty spot after 20 minutes when the referee awarded a penalty. Although Patrick felt he won the ball cleanly the referee disagreed and the penalty was awarded. Unfortunately these decisions can go against you and you need to stay on your feet if you can - particularly when there was no real danger.

Chances were few and far between for both sides but we did create a number of shooting opportunities but seemed reluctant to take a chance with often the pass in the final third going astray.

Overall though the defence defended well and although at times we struggled to clear our lines Maidenbower had few chances so it was disappointing when Max L was unfortunate enough to get just the wrong connection as he went to clear a corner and headed in to his own net.

In the second half the game was evenly contested but yet again we failed to capitalise on the chances we created with often the final pass being delayed to long.

Some great football played in the middle of the park today but all too often we seemed to panic in the final third and once again were left to regret another slow start.

A disappointing result for us but a performance that we should draw heart from as we played so much better than previous weeks especially in the second half when, with a bit more luck, we could and probably should have got something from the game. The opening 20 minutes was fairly even as both teams had their chances to take the lead. Unfortunately, a mix up in our defence allowed Heron in to put us behind but despite this a dogged display from Jordon & Stephen and the improving Chris A limited efforts to long range. The boys fell further behind 10 minutes before the break which put them under more pressure but they fought back well and almost on half time Luke fired a great effort in from the left to put us back in it. Throughout the half Callum & Jack up front were causing their own problems for Heron but without any luck.

The second half had us kicking down the slope and as we piled on the pressure the shots rained in on the Heron goal. Luke & Alex worked a corner from the left and after two efforts were blocked James struck what we all thought was the equaliser from the edge of the box only to see the ball bounce off the foot of the upright. The to add insult & against the run of play a harmless clearance out of our defence was thumped from long range high over JJ in goal leaving him with no chance. Again we pushed forward but the ball just wouldn’t run for us as Josh, Callum, Luke & Jordon all had efforts saved. Of course as we pushed up the gaps were left at the back and despite great defending throughout the game the boys were caught cold by a long through ball that was finished well leaving us 1-4 down. Still more chances came our way as Josh scraped the post with a fine effort and then Luke fired a fierce shot just over. Finally we got some luck when Callum finished calmly but it was too late to allow a come back.

Never mind boys, we are playing better football and the luck will turn around!
   U15 League: Ockley Acorns 0 v 0 Royal United
The boys secured their first point of the season with a battling performance away at Ockley.

In an even first half, keeper James Hatton made some inspired saves. However a strong defensive performance by debutant Sam Todd, Conor May, Nick Jones and Asher Jenkins always made it difficult for Ockley.

Ockley saw more of the play in the second half but Hatton and his defence remained resolute and Ockley could not find a way through. The mid field and attack continued to look for an opportunity to score, but chances were few and far between.

Well done to all the boys for a great battling performance.

A much improved performance from the Under 14's this week who were quick out of the blocks and dominated this game from the start.

Copthorne put up stubborn resistance but Max D went close early on but rushed his shot and just pulled it wide. However Max was instrumental in the opening goal after 20 minutes when a fierce shot was parried by the keeper and Patrick was on hand to fire home the rebound.

Max D then made it 2-0 5 minutes later when Ben P crossed for Max to slot home following some excellent team play.

Max L then had the chance to make it 3-0 when a Copthorne defender controlled the ball with his hand but his penalty was tamely struck and the Copthorne keeper saved.

In the second half the team continued to defend resillently to keep our goal in tact and we continued to create chances only to find the Copthorne keeper in inspirational form.

However, there was nothing he could do about the 3rd goal when Max L sprinted clear and lifted the ball in to the top corner from a very tight angle.

The team at this stage looked extremely confident and kept the ball well with accurate passing.

An excellent performance from everyone today and lets make sure we have the same positive attitude next week.

   U15 League: Royal United 2 v 5 Lingfield
The boys suffered another home defeat this time against last year's runners up, Lingfield.

A sluggish start proved costly as the boys found themselves 3-0 down mid way through the first half. However, the boys kept working and it was only a matter of time before their attacking play was rewarded. A move starting back in defence with captain Conor May ended with Alex Hughes crossing superbly for James Callaby to brilliantly finish.

The 3-1 half time deficit left the boys with plenty to do in the second half but they didn't have to wait long before they reduced the arrears. Good work by Matt Probin and Sam Freeman out on the left wing gave Sam the opportunity to cross for Alex Hughes whose deft flick found James Callaby who burst the net with a powerful shot.

The game was very even for a period and Matt Mason's long shot nearly brought the boys level as the goalkeeper fumbled the ball for a corner. That was as close as the boys went and they were punished by 2 further late Lingfield goals.

Heads up boys, we have now played the two toughest teams in the league. There's plenty to be optomistic about, so let's look forward to getting three points at Ockley next week.

   U12 League: Dorking St. Puma's 2 v 9 Royal United
Well, the boys continue to impress me immensely!

After last weeks impressive win, we travelled to Dorking to take on Dorking Saints Puma’s (formerly St. Martins) and having drawn twice with them last year, expected another tight match and this is the way it started with Dorking taking an early lead on 5 minutes. However, Royals responded in terrific fashion, Chris Keeble battling well and setting up Alex Taylor to open his and Royals account.

We seemed to step up a gear after the goal and then on 9 minutes, the very hard working Jonny Washington-Jones on the right hand side, setup another for Alex to make the score 2-1. DSP never gave up and had an effort just go over, before 10 minutes of pressure from Royals consistently putting the opposition on the back foot. Then we saw Alex hit the post and the rebound fell to Harry Garman who saw his effort go just wide.

Then 5 minutes before half time, Alex broke away from the defence after some neat play by Lewis Clark & Jacob Waller, who have been inspirational in the centre of the park, creating the chances and working hard for the team. Alex rounded the keeper to get his hat-trick before half time.

Then Jacob Waller, played a great ball to Jonny Washington-Jones, who in turn setup Lewis Clark, but his effort again just went wide of the upright. We finished the half strong, when Josh Wood delivered a perfect corner but Guy Packham saw his volley again go inches the wrong side of the post. Half time 3-1

The second half saw Royals playing up the hill and 2 changes in Luke Polie & Will Jones coming on. Immediately Guy Packham went close with a rasping effort, but it was Luke Polie who increased Royals lead when he got the ball with his back to goal and spinning quickly and getting a shot off quickly, saw the ball driven into the bottom corner of the net. Royals seemed to be dominating, with Josh Wood & Guy Packham causing carnage down the left hand side. It was Guy who then got his first of the game to make it 5-1.

Continual pressure was put on the Dorking goal, with Guy Packham again volleying just wide & Alex Taylor just sending the ball over the bar. Guy then got another as we continued to create chance after chance. Another pinpoint corner by Josh Wood found Luke Polie’s head but again we saw his effort go inches over the bar.

We then got number 7 when Lewis Clark saw his effort hit the bar and Alex Taylor reacted quickest as the goal-keeper tried to recover to slot home his 4th of the match. DSP then caught out our backline and cleverly broke away and a good shot saw them bring the score back to 7-2 as the shot went in off the post.

A volley with 10 minutes to go saw Guy Packham get a thoroughly deserved hat-trick, before Chris Keeble saw a 20 yard left footed attempt hit the bar. Then, to finish the game off, some good passing football between Guy Packham & Luke Polie, saw the unselfish Guy present Luke with another opportunity which Luke wasn’t going to turn down and Royals finished off 9-2 winners.

Will Jones came on in the second half at right back and after taking a few minutes to settle, put in a solid performance. Again, Harry Garman & Jamie Puddicombe looked impressive in central defence with the pacy Reiss Blackwood & Josh Wood supporting magnificently. Josh Gay in goal was commanding and although couldn’t do anything with the goals we conceded, was brave and commanding when required.

Another superb display of football boys! Take this away, and let’s build on a great start to the season and play with the confidence that we now have.

Well done ALL of you today & the brilliant support from all the parents who turned up!

A good performance away from home see's the under 11's get their first 3 points!

A sloppy start saw Dorking break away to get a quick goal. 1-0 to Dorking.

The only thing this seemed to do was fire up the Royals. Dan M and Sam both had superb games in the middle of midfield. Dan M passed the ball through to Stevie who drilled a shot into the bottom left hand corner. 1-1.

Good passing from Peter and Dan M saw them set up Sam who was 25 yard from goal and completely unmarked. He turned and hit a powerful strike that went in of a defender. Sam's shot was on target and he was awarded the goal. 1-2 to the Royals.

Half Time

The defence had been superb all game and they kept Dorking pinned back, Owen, Ben and Sean all making good clearances. But Perry was a rock in the middle, winning every header and tackling well he didn't give the Dorking strikers a chance.

A corner from Sam found it's way to Dan M on the edge of the box, he headed it forward to set himself up with a volley that dipped towards the top corner, only just going over, would have a contender for goal of the season!

More pressure from Royals saw Joe sprint clear of the Dorking defence who seemed to try and play him offside in the wrong half. The keeper rushed out and Joe passed in underneath him to make it 1-3 to the Royals.

Well played to all the players, nobody had a bad game and everything we did in training worked on the pitch.

   U9 Friendly: Royal United 0 v 6 Three Bridges
Game 2 Royal United 0 v 3 Three bridges
   U13 League: Royal United 1 v 6 Henfield
Against probarbly the strongest team in our division the boys played so much better than the previous week. Some hard tackling and determined defending kept Henfield out early on before we took the lead mid way into the first half. A fierce shot from Luke was only half stopped by the keeper and Alessandro followed up well to tap in his first for the club. Henfield then piled ion the pressure although great work from Alex and Ben kept us in front. Two quick goals however from moves through the centre put us behind and then a third followed right on half time.

Unfortunately we then lost our influential central defender Jordon and full back Chris to injuries. Early in the second half we had good chances to get back into the game as first Luke then Callum saw efforts cleared. Some great determination from all the boys meant that we competed well all over the pitch but in the end as we pushed up to try for a result we were caught at the back and three goals went in over the last 8 minutes.
Never mind boys you showed great character and determination against a tough side. Well Done.
Sat , 08 U14 League: Ockley Utd 5 v 2 Royal Utd
Terrible defending in the first 20 minutes of this game gifted Ockley 3 goals and condemned the team to an opening day defeat.

Although the team did recover their composure and competed well for the remainder of the game they never looked like they were going to overcome the deficit despite creating a number of good chances.

The team needs to quickly realise that they need to be a lot more competitive from the start of games and be more committed in their tackles if they are not going to find themselves struggling at the bottom of the table again this year.

In the first half the opposition had committed at least 8 fouls on us and they were determined to win every ball whereas we too often pulled out of challenges. Players need to learn from this game and be prepared to commit physically if they want to stay in the top division.

On a positive note the team competed far better in the second half and kept the Ockley attack much quieter. When in possession we generally passed the ball well and created some good openings. The first goal came when Patrick played a neat ball through to Max L who controlled it with his chest and lobbed the advancing keeper. Max D grabbed the second when Max L dribbled in to the box and pulled it back for Max D to finish.

   U12 League: Royal United 8 v 3 Billingshurst Yth
What an impressive start to the season!

Our first league game of the season and what a cracker it was. We’ve again managed to strengthen the squad this year with Luke, Jamie & Will signing on and with Jacob Waller coming in halfway through last season, we have a team who should be pushing for promotion.

The first half of this match saw some scintillating football, probably the best football we’ve played at 11-a-side. We played the ball around the pitch effortlessly and took the lead when Chris Keeble used his pace to get clear of the defence, but saw his shot palmed away by the keeper, but Alex Taylor was on hand to tap in. We then broke down the left hand side and some great interchange football by Guy Packham & Lewis Clark saw us break and a pin-point cross to Alex and he tucked it into the corner to make it 2-0.

Then the best goal of the game appeared out of nothing, when a pass to Lewis Clark, with his back to goal and a defender behind him, he chipped the ball over his head, turned the defender and from 18 yards volleyed the ball into the top corner. This had every supporter including the opposition clapping, showing their appreciation of some superb skill.

The pressure was continually coming from Royals, and with Josh Gay taking over in goal for the injured Aaron Chaplin and the back four of Reiss Blackwood, Harry Garman, Joshua Wood and an exceptional debut from Jamie Puddicombe, we didn’t look like we’d concede. Reiss delivered a ball down the line and some good interchange between Chris Keeble & Alex Taylor, saw the ball go just wide. In all of this, Billingshurst were making sure we were being caught off-side on quite a few occasions, but with the pace of the Royals forward, when we did manage to stay on-side, we were always looking dangerous.

A short goal kick was then intercepted by Lewis Clark, who made it 4-0. Then to finish the half, Jonny Washington-Jones, who worked extremely hard all match on the right side, scored from a good 25 yards out, with a tremendous strike. Then Alex completed his hat-trick before half time to make it 6-0.

In the second half, we gave Luke Polie & Will Jones their debuts, but Billingshurst got a goal back, when we seemed to lose our shape, as everyone decided they wanted to try and score. Alex got his 4th, before Billingshurst got another and Alex got his 5th when a good clearance by Josh Wood sent him through.

Billingshurst finished this goal feast with a 3rd late on, but Royals had done enough to seal this convincing win.

A special mention to both Jacob Waller & Lewis Clark who worked extremely hard in the centre of the park all game!

The first half of this game was breath-taking, but we must learn from the second half, that even though we may have a good lead, we must keep our shape and fully concentrate on the game at all times. This will ensure we are where we need to be and not rush. Saying that, nothing can take away from an exceptional display from the squad and we must now hold that confidence and play the football we did today!!

Well done to all of you and again for the brilliant support we got from parents. Also,
thanks have to go to Dave Waller for running the line and Nick Washington-Jones for doing a brilliant job at refereeing.

   U11 League: Royal United 1 v 5 Ockley Acorns
An unfortunate start for the under 11's.

The first half was a close contest, Ockley passed the ball better but we kept battling and created a couple of chances. Sam in defence and Matt in goal playing very well. A bit more composure from the midfield with their passing and we would have created more chances for the strikers. However the tackling and work rate was good. A quick counter saw Ockley break away to score the only goal of the first half. 0-1

Second half started with Ockley flying out the traps. They scored a good second goal. 0-2 This caused heads to drop and lead to an easy quick third goal. 0-3. A quick bit of rallying and the boys picked themselves up. Some good dribbling from Will H down the right started to lift spirits. A tackle from Dan M saw us break away, Ollie was left one on one and slotted home a nice finish. 1-3. This fired up the Royals and some good tackling from Joe saw him battle through both the midfield and defence for a one on one himself but his shot was just wide.

Some more good play followed but Ockley caught us on the counter attack to score a fourth. 1-4. With only a few minutes to go Ockley had pushed 4 upfront trying to score as many as possible and the Royals heads dropped again. A tame shot from the edge of the box was left by Dan M and Matt who thought it was going wide but the ball curled in. 1-5.

The boys fought hard throughout a tough game with last year's champions and were once again on the wrong end of a 3-2 score line.

Hurstpierpoint settled first and took the lead in the opening minutes. The boys however played themselves into the game and equalised when Dan Drazek headed in Matt Mason's cross.

Both teams pressed for the advantage and Hurstpierpoint scored a second to lead 2-1 at half time.

During a tight second half, chances were few and far between but it was Hurstpierpoint who increased their lead with a far post header. The boys kept on working and reduced the arrears when captain Conor May headed Matt Mason's corner into the net. Although the boys battled for an equaliser it was not to be.

Well done boys for an encouraging performance. A special mention to new boys Sam Freeman and Matt Probin (who returns after a 2 year break)who both played well today.

Wed , 05 U15 Friendly: Royal United 4 v 1 Horsham Crusaders
The boys got off to an encouraging start for the forthcoming season with a 4-1 victory over Horsham Crusaders.

Alex Hughes opened the scoring with a fine shot from distance during the first half. Despite further chances for both teams, the score remained 1-0 at half time.

Crusaders equalised mid way through the second half but the boys fought hard until the end and reward with late goals from Dan Drazek, Matt Probin and James Callaby.

Well done to all the boys and a special welcome to our new boys Sam Freeman, Sam Todd and Matt Probin.
   U13 Friendly: Royal Utd 7 v 2 Horsham Crusaders
Royal United 7 – 2 Horsham Crusaders

An early pre-season test for the boys who were all keen to play having had a good summer break. Royals began well enough and had a couple of good chances as both Callum & Chris A battled hard up front but it was Crusaders who opened the scoring with a fierce shot from 15 yards. But the boys bounced straight back and following great work by Callum on the left the ball was crossed and George netted well from 6 yards. Ben Palmer & Jordon Smith at the back both looked in good form, as did Luke & new boy Allessandro in midfield. Crusaders twice went close and probably should have taken the lead before half time but the scores were tied at the break.
The second half saw the boys pass the ball with plenty of confidence and the tackling became more competitive as demonstrated admirably by Alex and James. Early in the half a break down the left saw the ball work its way across to Toby who made no mistake. Straight from the kick off however, Crusaders broke through the centre unchallenged to put the game back level at 2-2. Royals then appeared to step up a gear a good run from Alex down the right led to a corner that was eventually converted by Luke. Another break on the right this time set up Toby to score his second before our captain, Josh made an impressive run with the ball, beating three defenders before hitting an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net to put the result beyond doubt. Two more fine goals from Luke gave him his hat trick and Royals a perfect start to the seasons preparations.
Well done everyone a great start, keep up the hard work.
Sat , 01 U14 Friendly: Cranleigh Cobras 1 v 0 Royal United
An inspired performance from the Cranleigh Goalkeeper and Centre Half succesfully frustrated us today and despite a lot of dominance and a lot of chances we failed to find the back of the net - hitting the woodwork 3 times.

Thu , 30 U14 Friendly: Twin Oaks 1 v 1 Royal United
Our first 11-a-side game in four months and the lack of match practice showed in what was a lacklustre perfromance.

Although we dominated the first half we lacked a cutting edge and too many of our passes went astray as we failed to get control of the ball.

In the second-half Twin Oaks began to get more control of the game. Having not got in to our penalty area in the first half they started to put us under pressure and were rewarded when they took the lead 15 minutes from the end.

The teams reaction to this set back, however, was very positive. The goal shaking the team in to action! Suddenly we were back on top and Max D and Patrick started to win most of the tackles in the centre of midfield and everyone in the team was playing with a greater urgency. The equaliser came when Patrick played a neat pass behind the defence for Max L to finish.

However, with the team now dominating the winning goal just wouldn't come.

Sun , 26 New U12's make Copthorne 6-a-side final
The sun was out and we travelled to Copthorne to defend our title won last year. A fabulous time was had by all, parents and supporters alike who turned up in their droves for today’s tournament.

We got off to a great start by beating last years beaten finalists 3-2, with a brace from Lewis Clark & another by Luke Polie.

In the next two games, we seemed to take our foot off the peddle again and some slack marking saw us lose 2-0 against Twin Oaks and then 1-0 to Copthorne. However, there were some real positives to come out of those games, especially the performance of both Luke Polie & Jamie Puddicombe. Luke is strong & links up well with midfield, with Jamie, who is quick and goes on some lung-bursting runs, causing panic to the opposition. This meant we could still make the semis by beating TD Shipley and we did this by going back to play the way we know we can and came out deserved 1-0 winners to send us through.

Our semi-final was then against Copthorne and we already knew that if we won, we’d be up against Horley and the same final as last year. After getting off to a slow start again, we seemed to settle down quicker and played some fluent passing football and came out 4-3 winners, with two goals from Guy Packham (who had a blinding game) & a goal apiece from Luke Polie & Alex Taylor. Again, the trickery of Lewis Clark, the solid defending of Harry Garman & Joshua Wood and the driving play of Alex Taylor, kept us on track. However, full credit has to go to Copthorne, who never gave up the fight.

This years final did see Royals up against Horley, again. Royals seemed to settle the quicker and although after normal time, it was 0-0, I really believe we should have had it in the bag by then. We then had 6 minutes of injury time, but somehow just couldn’t find the back of the net and so we went to penalties.

I hate going to penalties and didn’t think either side should loose, but that’s football and so the kicks went:

Horley 1 1 x 1 x x x 1
Royal Utd 1 x 1 1 x x x x

Aaron Chaplin who had been in great form during the tournament, saved 4 penalties out of the 8 taken, but unfortunately we couldn’t score ourselves, which would have seen us win the tournament. Worse was to come as Aaron very nearly saved the 8th penalty, but in his efforts of doing so, fractured his right wrist and will now unfortunately spend 6 weeks on the sidelines.

   U14's Win Copthorne Tournament
The new U14's got the season off to a great start by winning the Copthorne Tournament.

The tournament was run on a league basis and although the team got off to a slow start with a 0-0 draw against Brockham Badgers they went on to win the remaining 5 games to win the league by 5 clear points.

Having beaten Copthorne A & B and Twin Oaks the crucial game was against a strong Oxted team who were 2nd in the league.

Although Royals took the lead in the first half Oxted equalised early in the second half and it looked like we may have to settle for a draw.

However, with a minute left the whole team combined to create the best goal of the tournament in a sweeping move.

With the tournament won it was also gratifying that the team went on to beat Maidenbower Colts in their final game to end the day unbeaten, with 10 goals scored and only 1 conceeded.

An excellent performance. Well done to you all.

Sat , 14 U13's Make Semi-Final at Uckfield Tournament
The U13's put in yet another great display to reach the semi-finals of the Uckfield tournament but unfortunately with only one substitute today they ran out of steam when perhaps the tournament was their's to be won.

The team started slowly when they went 1-0 down in their opening game but a terrific second half saw them win 3-1.

In the next game they put in a great performance against Old Town Boys (the eventual winners of the tournament) and secured a well deserved 2-0 win.

They went on to win their next two games 4-0 and 3-1 to qualify for the semi-final with a game still to play.

With the players now tiring we tried to rest some of the boys in the final group game (which we lost 1-0) and Max Love's younger brother Zac stepped up to give the players some respite.

In the semi-final we got the dream start when Max L opened the scoring but Langton Green equalised almost immediately and the team did start to look very tired. When the game went in to extra time it was Langton Green who got the break and although the team gave everything to get back in to it they unfortunately ran out of time and energy.

Well played everyone today. Particularly Tom who had a great day despite suffering from a nasty chesty cough.

Sat , 30 U12 Hurstpierpoint 6 a-side
What a great day we all had despite the weather trying its' hardest to spoil things. Both teams played so well throughout the day and there were some memorable performances. For the Royals Rockets there was some fantastic finishing by Callum, outstanding slide tackling by Alex and great alround team work. Oh, and I nearly forgot, JJs' goal in the game against Royals Racers. Then of course the day finished off almost perfectly as we stormed into a 3-1 lead against the tournament runaway winners Fishersgate. Sadly they managed to peg us back to a 3-3 draw but that was still the only point they dropped all day and the most goals scored against them.

Meanwhile for the Racers, they really showed what can be done when you pass the ball. Superb finishing by Josh and tremendous individual skills from Chris Annetts saw us beat an East Grinstead side that finished well above us in the league this year. Then to round off the day Stephen popped up and knocked in two goals in the last match to gives us our best win of the day by 3-0 against the hosts.

Well done everyone, what an enjoyable day (even though I'm still drying out the gazebo and my car!!). You should all be proud of your performances today and I look forward to next season.
Sun , 10 U13's Runners Up at Steyning Tournament
The U13's reached their second tournament final of the season with yet another impressive display.

The team progressed from the group stage as group winners having one all of their games and conceeded no goals.

They won through to the final with an impressive 3-0 win against the hosts.

But they found themsleves a goal down against Upper Beeding in the final when a speculative long range shot found the bottom corner.

Royals responded positively in search of the equaliser and threw players forward. Max L saw two headers get tipped over the crossbar by the keeper and Patrick fired what looked like the equaliser but it came back off the post. David also had a great chance to level the scores but the ball seemed to get stuck under his feet.

Unfortunately it wasn't to be Royals day and as the team threw caution to the wind in search of the equaliser Upper Beeding grabbed the killer second goal and ultimately snatched a 3rd to give Upper Beeding a flaterring 3-0 win.

Great performance from everyone today and a first trophy for many of the squad today. Well done.

   U12 6 a-side runners up at Steyning
A great day for the under 12's as they turned in a tremendous display of football. Although our group was perhaps the easier of the two we still produced some fine results in beating Steyning, Horsham Tigers and a good Chesworth side all by 2 goals to nil. Despite loosing our first game 1-0 to a freak goal we still won the group. In the semi finals we came up against a strong Steyning A team who had just knocked out Roffey Robbins Wanderers. Going 1 up in the first half we looked to have done enough to reach the final but were caught cold by a fine equaliser. As the game went to extra time it seemed as though penalties were looming before up popped Alex Best to put us in the final.
The final was a tough game against Henfield but the boys had worked so hard on a hot day that they had given their all and we were narrowly beaten by 3 goals to 1 with Callum Smethurst producing a fine effort to keep us in the game early on.

Well done to all the boys on a great achievement.

Sun , 20 U13's Runners Up at Cranleigh Tournament
The U13's went one better than last week and finished runners-up at the Cranleigh tournament losing in a penalty shoot out to Ockley Acorns Utd.

The team had put in some dazzling performances to reach the final. Although they drew their first game 0-0 they won the next two group games 5-0 and 4-0 to win the group.

In the semi-final they faced local rivals Southwater and won emphatically 3-0 to reach their first Cranleigh Final.

In the final Royals took the lead early on but they conceeded their first goal of the tournament when Ockley equalised in the second half.

In extra time Royals again took the lead and with only 2 minutes left to play thought they had won the game but Ockley carved out another equaliser to take the game to penalties.

Sat , 12 U11's @ Northchapel Yth Tournament
A great day was had by all, as Royal United finished 3rd, losing out on 2nd spot on goal difference (by 1 goal) to Horsham Sparrows.

Although finishing 3rd, we were by far the best footballing side there (even if I say so) with some great passing moves by the boys. Luke Polie, who played his first tournament for Royals, proved what an immense signing he will be, if he decides Royals is for him.

Results:

Whyke : Lost 2-0
Chiddingfold : Won 1-0 (Luke Polie)
Northchapel 'A' : Won 3-0 (Guy Packham HAT-TRICK!)
Horsham Sparrows : Won 2-0 (Lewis Clark & Luke Polie)
Lower Beeding : Won 2-0 (Harry Garman & Lewis Clark)
Northchapel 'B' : Drew 1-1 (Luke Polie)
Horsham Crusaders : Lost 2-0

Well done all the boys today, you showed what a class team you are and that on your day, you can beat any team.

Squad: Aaron Chaplin, Joshua Wood, Jonny Washington-Jones, Harry Garman, Lewis Clark, Jacob Waller, Guy Packham & Luke Polie.
U13's Make Semi-Final at Ockley Tournament
Blue Team

The blue team started well with a 2-0 win and although they then slipped up in the next game and lost a game they dominated 1-0 they bounced back to win the remaining two games 2-1 and 1-0 to win their group.

In the semi-final Royals faced Old Dorkinains. They dominated the game from the start and probably had 95% of the possession but somehow managed to conceede a goal on the only occassion that Old Dorkinians got in to our half.

Although Royals pressed hard for the equaliser the goal just wouldn't come and the team unfortunately had to miss out on what would have been a fourth final in five years at Ockely.

Squad:- Jacob, Edward, Theo, Ben L, William(1), Patrick(2), Max L(2) and Max D.

Unfortunately the yellow team had to face a very strong Albury team in the first game and they never seemed to recover from a demoralising 4-0 defeat.

The team did however play some lovely football and passed the ball well but never got the break they needed in front of goal. Although they lost their next two games they did manage to secure a point in their final game against Brockham Badgers.

Wed , 25 U14 League: Broadbridge Heath 1 v 0 Royal United
The boys ended their league programme with a 1-0 defeat against local rivals Broadbridge Heath.

In a tight first half Alex Hughes went close for the boys and James Hatton made some important saves to keep the scores level.

The second half was fairly uneventful and it looked as if the game was heading for a 0-0 but Broadbridge Heath scored an excellent goal in the closing minutes to secure the points.

During the second half James Callaby sustained a serious injury and we all wish him well for a speedy recovery.

Well done to all the boys and Mark for an excellent season - third place in the A division is a fantastic achievement for a newly promoted team.

U13 League: Roffey Robins Utd 0 v 1 Royal Utd
Not much time to write a long match report but what a terrific performance from the team tonight and what a great way to finish what has been unfortuantely a disappointing season.

This was a terrific game of football and Royals played a full part in what was an entertaining game with excellent football played by both teams.

The goal came with 15 minutes to play when Max L released Ben Le to score from 15 yards. But we could have taken the lead 5 minutes earlier when excellent play from Max L on the left resulted in a near post cross that Ben Le just stabbed wide.

As Roffey pressed for the equaliser Max L looked like he put the result beyond doubt when he bundled home a 2nd goal but the referee disallowed it for pushing!

In the last 5 minutes the Royals goal came under a lot of pressure but the defence stood firm whilst Nathan made an excellent save to secure a well deserved clean sheet.

Sat , 21 U14 League: Royal United 1 v 2 Lingfield
Despite a battling performance, the boys were defeated in their final home match of the season.

Lingfield took an early lead and then both teams seemed to get bogged down in midfield. There were few real goal scoring chances and both goal keepers had very little to do.

The game opened up more in the second half and Lingfield increased their lead following a corner. The boys continued to battle and pull one back with a fine goal from Ryan Taylor. Further chances followed at both ends with James Callaby and Ryan Taylor both going close but Lingfield held firm to clinch the victory.

Well done boys for confirming third position in the A League after last year's promotion!

We look forward to Mark's return on Tuesday night - although he did a reasonable job, our stand in manager spent most of the time on the phone!
   U13 League: Maidenbower Colts 3 v 2 Royal United
Another double header game in which we actually drew 1-1 in the 1st game and lost 2-1 in the second.

But the scoreline doesn't do justice to the performance of the team who played some terrific football and fully deserved to at least get 3 points from the two games.

A disappointing final result but a very enouraging performance against a team that is likely to finish runners-up in the division.

William and Max D grabbed the two goals following a great flick from Max D and a quick throw-in from Max L but we could have had so many more if the offside flag wasn't raised every time we broke clear.

Although it may now be too late to avoid finishing in the bottom two this season the team has shown in the last three games that they are capable of competing with the very best. Let's hope that whatever division we are playing in next season that we look to build on these performances and achieve our potential next season.
